The Sky Plug Sky Base Canopy upgrade kit is an interesting product that has many benefits that come along with the general concept of it and many questions that are still likely to play out. The idea of being able to upgrade an old lighting fixture so that it can be easily installed in the ceiling instead of having to climb on the ladder AND balance the fixture while trying to attach it seems like a logical and great solution to a cumbersome and awkward job, right? A simple flip of a lever on the side of the canopy clicks the fixture securely in place and easily releases the fixture for it to be removed. Great solution! But the idea of interchangeability or to have a light fixture easily and or regularly removed...? For what purpose? Replacement of a fixture? Sure, but how often do we do this and unless these become widely accepted as the standard across the board for attaching a ceiling light fixture, then most people won't even know what to do with this going forward unless you originally installed it and know the benefits and how it works. Maybe as a solution for the ability to remove an outdoor patio ceiling light fixture for different seasons? Brilliant, but this is not rated for outdoor or damp areas. Seasonal light fixture changes for the time of year indoors? Kind of like changing out the winter and summer curtains? Hmmm. I'm personally not quite there yet. The clean design is complementary enough to most modern fixtures but I personally find the release lever on the side of the canopy visually unappealing. Then there's the weight limitation of 35 pounds to consider if you are hanging something antique or oversized. In summation, I like the concept of this product very much and yet it seems superfluous in so many ways until this becomes the new standard for all fixtures. Watch the installation video as this makes it very simple to use and install.

An awesome invention, a great idea for easy to install or replace light fixtures. I got the bronze finish because it goes well with some of the fixtures around my house and the quick change is easy to setup and use. First the Skyplug comes with good instructions to follow and the plug itself has color coordinated posts for easy to put together. On the ceiling it is easy to just screw one end and plug the wires to it. On the other end with the light fixture it is also easy to plug the wires to that end and without touching any wires together just push into place and done. With a pull of the lever it is easy to take down the light too, I like it because on some light fixtures I’ve put up are sometimes heavy and I need a second hand while I get the wires together and with this I do not need another person to do it. Also I like the convenience to have the ability to change the lights more often, for entertainment, maybe the holidays too. Best of all it looks it does not look out of place; it blends in with the fixture.

When i first received the Skyplug I was thinking what have I got myself in to. However after reading the instruction manual it is very straight forward. The illustrations were very helpful also. All the parts are quality and the bronze color is excellent. There is also a video for installation on the Home Depot web site. I have someone coming in the spring to install as i am having some wiring issues. I am looking forward to using this product.

Safely hang or change pendant fixtures. Once the electrician or competent DIY-er has wired the socket in the ceiling box, you can finish wiring the light fixture to the plug half safely on a tabletop. The SkyPlug has a special 3-ball lift pin that can secure a 50 # load, though the device is rated for a 10 pound fixture. The socket is made to accept 12 or 14 gauge solid copper wire. The plug, 18 gauge solid SJT or SVT cord. Hanging is as simple as plugging in a lamp to an outlet. But when need to paint, just push the lever to release. You can unscrew the lever if you want the cleaner look but don't misplace it.w

The SkyPlug makes installing a pendant fixture quick and easy. Once the ceiling box socket is installed and wired to your electrical box, the rest of the light fixture can be connected and wires on a table top. Not working on a ladder. This makes it safer and quicker. I have used self-locking ball lock pins for years lifting heavy machines and fixtures. Once I saw how the SkyPlug worked, I was sold. The socket can handle 50# load for safety. The plug rates the cord set at 5# for lighter duty SVT cords and 10# for SJT cords. This is similar to vacuum or power tool cords. You do need a small #1 Phillips head screw driver for the plug wiring screws. But they’re easy to access. 18-gauge wire is recommended for plug and 12 or 14 solid copper for the ceiling socket. Great when you want to change a fixture for design reasons or when painting.

The sky plug 5 in. chrome sky base canopy upgrade kit for cord or rod pendant lighting product works great as advertised. Did exactly what I needed it to do and have no regrets purchasing it. It holds my pendant light over my kitchen sink without any issues at all. It brought an extra dimension to the look of the kitchen replacing the recess light fixture.

The Skyplug is a great idea. It was very easy to install and looks stylish mounted and fits in with any decor. I love it because the wife likes to change the light globe and style with the seasons. The globes are different shapes and sizes and depending on the globe she likes the length of the cord to be raised or lowered. With the Skyplug it is very easy to pull the unit down with the release lever on the side. With the whole unit on the table it's very easy to adjust the cable length. I recommend this unit highly.

The Skyplug is a unique mounting system for hanging pendants and other ceiling mount electrical devices. Skyplug allows ease of hanging AND re-hanging or replacement of light fixtures. Basically the top bracket is wired and stays put in the ceiling; while the bottom mating bracket wired to your light fixture slides into and locks in place with ingenious ball bearings operated by a lever. The connector latch is rated for light fixtures up to 35 pounds. While this is a remarkably clean installation and mounting system, the included instructions are a bit confusing and the advertising on the main page is misleading. This mounting system requires connecting bare wires to the two brackets with the built in screws and wire hold downs. This is NOT a “plug in with your three-prong light fixture” kinda install. This is a “clip your three prong cable and rewire re-mountable” kinda system. Other than the confusing advertising about what this product is, once you understand how it works, it’s remarkably ingenious. The thing that would make this product much more valuable is if it came with more than one lower bracket so you can attach them to your various other light fixtures that you want to rotate in and out as your mood changes. I think that was the whole point of this product - ease of light fixture rotation as your mood or design theme changes.

What a great idea & a great product. This item allows you to connect a base unit ("SkyOutlet") inside your ceiling electrical box that connects to the wires in the attic. Then the second part of the unit and the metal base (or escutcheon) can be connected to any of your existing or new light fixtures and then one can easily plug this whole base unit & light fixture into the base unit ("SkyOutlet") and with 360 degree adjust-ability and with a simple click - you have just hung your ceiling light fixture to the exact position you want. In a way it is like just plugging in the light fixture. The fixture can easily be changed in the future without having to deal with the hard-wiring in the ceiling box or attic. This model comes in a Bronze finish to hopefully match your own Bronze finish fixture. If not instructions say you can paint the base escutcheon to try and match. There are some weight conditions that would need to be met or looked at depending on the light fixture style that you want to use.

This is awesome and everyone should and will use them. I will use them as I update fixtures. Just be sure to buy the correct one; pendent or chained. Since obtaining my first skyplug I have done a lot of research on them and have found fans and light fixtures shipping with the skyplug attached, Installing a light or fan without holding it while connecting the wires in the ceiling, awesome. There are two main parts. First part installs in the ceiling. It's really small just has a place to connect the wires for the power feed, screws to connect to the junction box and the female portion of the skyplug connection. The wire slots are color coded and it takes 3 to 5 minutes. Follow the instructions they're really clear on this. The second part connects to the light fixture again 3 minutes and you're doing this on a table not in the air. Neither part weighs more than a few ounces. Finally the second part is plugged the fixture into the ceiling. You do need to lift the lock/release level up until it connects. Release the level and be sure everything is connected before letting the fixture go. Done, no holding a heavy awkward fixture while wiring it to a ceiling junction box. So I get this skyplug and my family agrees that when we're entertaining and tables are moved there are two hanging lights that are in the way because they hang to low. Skyplug to the rescue. The skyplug comes in two version, either for pendant or chained. Both my fixtures are chain held fixtures. I got the wrong one, I got the corded pendant skyplug, I should have read closer. I have ordered 2 complete units for chained fixtures. Problem I cannot find the, for chained fixture part individual, I have to buy the whole unit. This is a pain because I plan on unplugging the regular fixture during parties and installing a holiday or event type lighting fixture so I need 2 fixture connections. We still need light. This could mean buying 3 or 4 full kits and only using half the product if i do both lights. Once the fixture parts are sold separately this will be the best thing for home lighting. Updating, replacing will be fast and safe. Another concern is make sure you have hold of the fixture when removing it. If you lift the lever on the side the fixture will just fall to the floor.

I requested this quick connect/disconnect ceiling light fixture upgrade kit more as just another two items to review to keep me busy and give me options for remodeling our home. When it finally arrived, I was actually amazed at how well the upgrade kit was designed. It is so simple and straight forward to use that I even had my 2 year old activate the disconnect on the device. One thing that wasn't obvious is that you can also spin your light fixture 360 degrees before fully locking it in place. I have no problem recommending this and once we get some more debt paid off this next tax season, I plan to get a few more of these.

I love the idea of this plug and play light fixture but the reality is that it’s not as simple as it is made out to be. First off, it is not easy to install, at all. I’ve installed dozens of light fixtures over the years and this product is much more complicated. I just about gave up but decided to read some of its reviews and there I found some helpful hints about how to go about installing it. I would recommend to anyone who has it will purchase it to read the reviews. Once installed it looks fine but swapping out fixtures is not as simple as pushing a button! If you decide to swap out the fixture, yes, you can push the lever to disengage the fixture but then you’ve got to completely un-wire the current fixture and then completely wire in the new one to the base attachment. I’m not likely to do that on a whim. Also, the very, very tiny screws that hold the wiring in place will likely not last for many fixture exchanges. Nice idea, and I hope that there will be further development but again, it’s not as simple as it’s made out to be.

This review is for the Skyplug 5in. Brushed nickel Skybase Canopy kit for cord or rod. This is such a nice product, it makes any hanging lamp look so much more stylish and finished off. I will be using this for a haniging lamp next to my bed. This Canopy light kit would work great with any style of light fixture. It came with clear directions and in a timely manner. Well packaged too.

A very neat product with great applications. That being said, there are some problems. First the good, the build quality is excellent. The fit and finish are perfect and I don't have any doubt of its quality of materials. I love the idea of being able to swap hanging lights when needed, very cool and novel idea. I could see these being very useful for commercial applications and even trade show events where the lighting needs to be changed often. My main issue for residential applications is the ease of installation which takes some consideration, and the fact that it can't be used with a dimmer. Aside from that, the connection assembly is precise and sturdy. I want to work with these a little more and get used to the installation. I would still recommend this product for anyone who needs a product that allows them to swap out fixtures.

I give this product 5 Stars with some reservations. 1) Please note: SkyPlug recommends 12AWG solid wire for mounting the base to the junction box. Most code allows 14AWG stranded wire to be used in residential runs using 15 amps. Possibly, not all your boxes will have 12 gauge solid wire. The base wires will get a lot of movement as you install and tuck the wiring into the box. Make sure your set screws are tight. Most fixtures use 14 gauge stranded wire and the ceramic plug readily accepts this as it has a "cord clamp" to hold the wire securely. (see photos) 2) Make sure you push the "lever" up as you push the plug into the base making sure you hear the click. The "plug" has a 2 stage locking system to prevent accidental release of the fixture as some have reported. 3) I would not recommend inexperienced DIY's installing the "plug" portion as it requires very accurate measuring and wire stripping. I love the concept and technology especially for commercial applications. I will be removing my light fixture often as I remodel my kitchen, however I feel the average consumer does not "change or remove" fixtures often enough to realize the benefits. Most heavy ceiling fans and light fixture have hooks or hangers to support the fixture as you complete wiring. Also, as of this writing, the SkyPlug and base come as a kit. Even though reasonably priced, you will need a kit for each fixture you want use. Installation of the "base" to the junction box took about 10 minutes, however it took about 45 minutes to wire the "plug". 5 Stars for Quality, Concept, Technology, Appearance and Design. 4 Stars for Ease of Installation.

I received the SkyPlug 5 in. Brushed Nickel SkyBase Canopy Upgrade Kit for Cord or Rod Pendant Lighting to review for free. This is a unique concept and for the most part it's well executed. Before installing I was a bit skeptical whether this thing would hold the weight of a chandelier, and am glad that it does as advertised. The parts are nicely packaged and the instructions are good. However the actual installation can be tricky. One thing I found which wasn't explained well is that the unlock lever has to be pressed up twice to completely separate the plug from the socket. The pin that holds the two together has a two stage release using ball-bearings. You push-up the lever once and it unlocks one part to release the fixture, then you push the lever up again and pull the fixture down at the same time to separate the two parts. I have used the SkyPlug 5 to hang two chandeliers so far and am happy with the conveinience of being able to just plug-in the fixture. The only minor complaint I have is that the base cover does not stay flush with the ceiling due to the washers that they recommend using when mounting the base to the ceiling. Make sure you take time to follow instructions to attach the base to the ceiling and the plug to your fixture. I'm glad I can do the wiring of the fixture on the floor and not on the ladder while carrying all that weight. Attaching the fixture to the base is as easy as plugging in as described. Just remember to push the lever up while plugging in and make sure there is an audible click to confirm it's plugged in. Overall, this is a good concept and I'm hoping will hold for a long long time.

I already own SkyPlug's version for 'chain lighting' (308570878). I found it very helpful in hanging lights, and thought I would try this one, for 'rod pendant lighting' ... I live alone. So, hanging/wiring a heavy ceiling light is a chore. I typically get a ladder, and rest the fixture on top of it; as I do all the wiring with my hands above my head. This is so much easier. Wire the canopy (which weighs a few ounces) to the ceiling, then wire the fixture to the adapter, then plug them together (like a plug in an outlet). The canopy is made of good quality metal and is paintable. It looks great. Hopefully, these become a building standard, because their biggest benefit is being able to swap out fixtures. I do not see myself swapping fixtures, but the next home owner might. If everyone knows how to use them, they will be a great time saver. If not, it likely will take the next homeowner longer to figure out how they work, than save them time. It would help, if they put their website on the exterior (i.e. 'For Removal See SkyPlug.com'). It supports rod fixtures up to 35lbs, SVT cord (think indoor extension) to 5lbs, and SJT (think outdoor extension) cord to 10lbs. The direction state it is not compatible with dimmer switches (see pic). So, you will need smart dimmable bulbs, if you want to dim.

As suggested, we are adding website information on the product itself. Please also note that these products ARE compatable with dimmer switches. The instructions you read were inadvertantly added, and for a different product. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

The SkyPlug 5 in. Bronze SkyBase Canopy Upgrade Kit for Cord or Rod Pendant Lighting is a great idea and looks very nice and is rather simple to install. The draw back I found with this product is after installing it I had the feeling that my wife when cleaning dust with her long reach dust wand was that she was going to hit the release mechanism and sure enough she did and the light fixture fell off, My feeling is that there should be a button to lock it in place so this doesn't happen. Other then that I would have given it a 5 star review.
