What a great concept....a weed whacker on wheels! This 17" 43cc gas wheeled string trimmer/mower by Southland does everything a hand-held weed whacker does EXCEPT cause back pain and fatigue. The trimmer came complete with easy-to-follow instructions, a sampling of strings and a bottle of oil enough for 1 gal of gas. It is really easy to start, the trimmer head can swivel to get close to fences or walls and the trimmer head also bevels if you need to edge. We have about an acre of land with natural vegetation (aka Weeds) that need to be trimmed down because of fire danger and most of it is uneven, bumpy ground. This trimmer/mower handles it easily. it is very powerful and quickly cuts good size weeds. It uses a 50/1 gas to oil ratio and 3 different sizes of trimmer string (.095", .105" or .155") depending on the strength you need for your job. There is a handy string storage tube located on the handle so you can carry string with you for quick changes. All in all.... a high-quality, powerful, easy-to-use, great machine! My back thanks you!

This is a very powerful trimmer. It cuts through grass like nothing and through some pretty tough weeds with no effort. It does take some getting used to. If your ground is uneven you risk the chance of gouging your lawn but I think with practice you'll get the hang of it. One drawback is the fact that you have to change the string by hand. There is no auto feed feature and it does eat up the thinner string very quickly, however most of my trimming is against landscaping bricks and the manual states that cutting against concrete or brick will wear down your string faster. The thicker string obviously holds up much longer so I will probably purchase that for future use. But overall if you have a lot of trimming to do it's great because you don't have to carry the trimmer around with you.

From the box it took about 45 minutes to assemble. You will need one adjustable wrench or standard pair of plyers to assemble wheels to chassie. Instructions could be a little more graphic and larger print for the older customers. But if you are familiar with assembling mowers etc. the parts are easy to figure out. The trimmer head can easily be swiveled 20 percent to left/right. And 10 percent up/down for the beveled edge trimming. The wheels are sturdy and large a foot round allowing me to manuever the trimmer around to exactly the areas I need to get to. Under hedges around and under my deck, and around tight areas around sheds and other structures I have in my yards to numerous to mention. The trimmer is powered by a 43 cc engine requiring 50/1 gasoline lead free and oil. One bottle of oil also came with this mower which will mix with 1 gallon of gas.. The big reason I really love this trimmer is that it is on wheels and relieves having to carry the long heavy hand held trimmer weed wacker which after and hour really takes a toll on my lower back. Easy start pull string and a red on/off switch to shut down the trimmer safely. A storage tube attached to the trimmer to store additional cutting line which is handy if you are not near your supply in the shed. The throddle is very easy and large right under the handle. Everything is good quality and looks like will last for many years of service. Two thumbs up on this 17 inch gas trimmer on wheels. I love it and my back surely does too!

I regularly maintain several properties where weed whacking and mowing take several days each. I have used all sorts of gas weed whackers to various degrees of success but never thought I would use a weed whacker on wheels. I like the design a lot, it is easy to put together and moves side to side to cut against left or right surfaces, and even bevels for edging. The wheels really do make it easy to move around, and are large for uneven surfaces. I have a little difficulty moving it around on steep hills but to be fair it is hard to walk on them holding a standard weed whacker anyway. Being on wheels you are a little less mobile but not having to hold a gas tool in your hands and having a more powerful motor (in general) makes it easier to power through thick weeds. Highly recommended for anyone with a large property to maintain.

Good machine. Designed for a small person, less than 4-1/2 feet tall. For tall or even reg size people, the handle is way too short. An adjustable handle would solve this nicely. I had to bend over to use and push the trimmer.

I have had many trimmers over the years but this one is tops. It makes lawn care so much easier. My friend was so envious of this. He said he is going to buy one. He wanted to use mine, but I do not loan out my tools. Lost too many. I like that the head swivels, so nice. Also, I love the handle. This is the best trimmer. I have told many people about this great trimmer. Thank you very much.

  • Great Mower-Cutter for those tough weeded areas
  • April 22, 2017

This Trimmer-Mower is just the thing for any area that gets WEEDS, which guarantees you probably need this mower. Yes I know you can cut those areas with a hand held gas trimmer but the sound is a real pain, even with hearing protection. This trimmer-mower is gas operated, but it is not running next to your ears. That alone gives this cutter an advantage. but the cutting is also out in front of you, so you can easily see that you are only cutting the weeds and not the flowers you need to keep. The two pictures I included show just one area I used this mower-trimmer on. This trimmer-mower does the, job even on the heavy stemmed weeds, we see in the desert every spring. I know they look far apart, compared to the heavy lush landscapes in wetter climates, but here they stand up to desert animals and wind storms. Those lush plants can be cut just as easy with this mower-trimmer.

This Blower is an attachment for the Southland walk behind 43cc string trimmer. It pushes and or rolls with no effort, it is not that heavy, the weight is balanced on the large wheels perfectly, think dolly moving something light. Changing attachments is very easy, (watch my video) no tools just spin the latch to loosen pull the attachment out (say string trimmer head) push in the new attachment (say blower) till you get the little metal saddle all the way in the slot on the top, then tighten the latch and snap close. Start the engine and go... It has a lot of power, I have a hand held that says it has 120 mph and this Southland attachment claims 170 mph, I have no problem believing that at all, just for fun I was blowing stuff around like boxes, (the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys). It is close to the ground, but does not touch if you are on a smooth surface like a sidewalk, but walking through grass, it will hit the ground, but that is not a problem if you keep a lose grip on the handle and let it bounce with the bumps. It really rolls with next to no effort. The big factor is I DO NOT HAVE TO CARRY IT... I am getting up there, I have spurs in my right shoulder and muscle spasm on my right side, so basically my right side is falling apart, this makes the job of trimming, edging and blowing the clippings off the sidewalk, drive and patio much easer, with the added safety bonus using the trimmer attachment I can cut high grass without worrying what is hidden that I might hit, and if you want to take a break just let go, no bending over to lift or sit it down. I have one bone to pick, it comes with a round nozzle which attaches toollessly, with a hand turned bolt, I wish it had a flat nozzle in addition or even as an option. A flat nozzle focuses the force, so the output is magnified, and is more controllable or directional so you can blow clippings, leafs, sand towards exactly where you want them to go. In my city it is against the law to blow towards the street or towards a neighbor so controlling where that stuff is headed is kind of a big deal. I like having one 43cc 2 cycle (50:1) engine and 3 attachments, it gives me walk behind convenience without storing 3 large lawn tools, the attachments take up very little room, and if you remove the attachment from the Southland trimmer, it takes up less space in storage, again the attachments are toolless to remove or put on.

Pros Easy to Store, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Light Weight, Powerful, Small Turn Radius Cons no extra nozzles
