The paint job is very catching, anodised bright orange. Cool! A major benefit of this level is the gelshock end caps so I thought I’d best test them.
The level was dropped from a variety of heights the highest of which was eight feet and the gelshock end caps delivered every time. The level was being dropped onto a bare concrete floor and the gelshock end caps prevented serious damage and damped the bounce quite significantly – see video. A couple of times the level fell and I didn’t catch it so it hit the concrete and the paint job got scratched and the aluminum slightly dented.
The level has three bubbles; one horizontal and two vertical and they are all fixed so it is not as flexible as some levels that have one or two adjustable bubbles. Each of the bubbles is nicely encased in clear plastic housings that are screwed on and so, theoretically at least, replaceable if damaged.
There is a full length rubberized magnet running along the bottom of the level. I have used these kind of magnets before and they have proved to be weak. First impressions with this magnet are good though. It held easily and did not slip on steel poles.
Next I tried it on painted steel and the level did slide a bit before holding firm. Lastly I tried it on its side on the painted steel and the weight of the level proved too much for the magnet and it would not hold at all. Shame really as this is a nice tool but it needs stronger magnets to realize its full versatility. It could also use another bubble so that when placing the level vertically the user can see whether the top and bottom levels are lined up correctly.
The packaging claims 0.029 degree vial accuracy which, for all practical uses, is perfect. Another claim is “2 x stronger …” but I am not sure what it is being compared to. The tool has a limited lifetime guarantee.
This is a well-made level and useful if its limitations are fully understood.
This is a good solid level for a multitude of uses with the features that really help this product rise above the rest.
The gel end shock padding are some of the best I have seen at this price range and impressed me. There is not the usual small amount of padding on the end, instead there is a whole gel insert type of system. The gel areat is a good couple inches long and in the end and has some room for it to compress. This substantially helps the level absorb shock if it is dropped.
The level also is super sturdy, its solidly made and has some nice gel grips inside the hand holds. Its on the heavy side since it is so sturdy which could be a negative for some people.
On the negative side, this is billed as magnetic and mine was super weak. The level was just too heavy to be held up event in a vertical position. It did help when you where holding it to magnetic items since it did assist it sticking but the magnetic pull was just too weak on my level to be billed as magnetic.
Accurate, All In One, Durable, Strong, Sturdy
Heavy, weak magnetic hold
The quality seems fine but I have only owned it for a month. It seems well built and sturdy. I received it for free so I was able to test the drop off concrete garage from 2-4-6 feet. It did not break, bend, nor crack the water level so that is great. I did not use force just gravity as obviously that would have the expected results of serious damage.
I would rather prefer something made in USA over China I am sorry. You cant control quality well nor really tell if it is the correct metals or not. Too often Aluminum or Stainless Steel really isn't.
Overall a great 2' level. The gel-shock end caps seem to be very effective at their purpose. I dropped the level several times onto a concrete surface, and the level did not have any signs of damage or misalignment.
The level features a long magnetic sign, with a small v-groove for aligning on pipework. The magnet is strong enough to keep the level suspended, but not from spinning or moving around on a pipe.
The clear part of the end caps is very squishy, and I can see it taking a bit of abuse. The end caps are a little bit smaller than the overall dimensions of the level as to not interfere with laying it flat, however that also means that they will not protect the level if it falls flat on the ground. Double edged sword, but completely necessary.
As far as I can tell, the level seems accurate, even after several purposeful drops. The vials are easy to read. The level is mainly an aluminum extrusion. I really wish that they took the time to facemill the edge instead of just pulling the extrusion straight out, but this is such a menial thing that will likely never affect the regular user.
Accurate, Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight
I was not familiar with the company Savage but pleasantly surprised to see the Swanson logo on it as well, a company I already know that makes quality levels and measuring tools. I'm not sure if they make the whole level or just the vials but either way it immediately instilled confidence. I like the quality materials used including the gel handgrips, the thick end caps to keep from damaging the level, I like the very thick and sturdy aluminum body and the color is nice and easy to see as well. The magnetic strip holds onto steel columns well and even has a groove cut into it for round pipe or bar. That was well thought-out. Easy to see, read and use. 0.029 degrees of accuracy should be well within pretty much anyone's tolerances for normal building and construction, DIY projects or professional use. All in all a quality level.
This is a very solid and accurate level. Swanson's Savage line of levels bump up the quality to a whole new level. The gelshock endcaps are a very nice feature, as sooner or later, every level will be dropped. The bubbles are encased in a solid piece of clear plastic, which also adds to the durability. The magnetic strip is firmly attached and grooved into the level, which on cheaper levels, these tend to come unglued. I do not expect that to happen with this level, but if it ever does, I will update this review. The only part that could become lost is the rubber grip in the center of the level, as it is a friction fit inside the handle. This would not effect the accuracy or usefulness of the level though. I do recommend this level!
Accurate, Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Strong, Sturdy
I purchased this 4' level to replace an economy priced level. It was a great decision to get this one. It just screams quality looking at it. It has gel ends to help protect it if it should fall, and honestly, who hasn't dropped their level? It is a very stable width, which makes it less likely to fall when in use. It also has a magnetic side to keep it in place on magnetic surfaces. The bubbles are very easy to read, and you can look through the level's surface to read it in tight spots. Great purchase!!!
Accurate, Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Long-Lasting, Strong, Sturdy
I like this level it is very sturdy and durable and the gel ends are really nice. I use the level for my appliance repair Buisness and the magnet is great when installing a refrigerator and the gel ends help protect from scratching the appliances and floors, a big plus when using a metal level in a kitchen. I had used a cheaper aluminum level with no end caps in the past and no matter where you placed the level there was always going to be a scratch so I had put tape on the thing just to prevent the possibility of scratching something, lets just say that old thing has been retired!
