Installing the exterior hinge and locking mechanism was easy, just follow the install procedures. Now the interior install was a bit challenging. Removing the coil cover of the cable was hard coz you dont want to cut the cable inside. Make sure the coil cover does not touch the yellow kick lever. You have to pull the cable 1/2-1/3 before tightening the cable on the kick lever. This you have to try many times until both mechanism unlock at the same time. I would give it 5 stars but 4 stars for difficulty in the interior mechanism

They were much better than the Grisham window bar quick release unit. They fit much better than Grisham units. They are slightly costly than Grisham and I think there is huge demand or shortage of Grisham units for they were not available in my local Home Depots and had to get them from far away, but the locking mechanism did not lock at all and if it did it was at a weird angle. When I tried to return it to local Home Depots they would not accept it saying the bar code is not present in the store. This unit works nicely out of the box. I like it.

I bought three of these to put on my bedroom windows. I got the Release for the first window COMPLETELY installed. When I went to test the action of the Kick Plate, the cable controlling the upper release BROKE inside the top unit. There is NO WAY to get inside the unit to repair it, and no way to get the Window Guard open, so I had to grind off the heads of the one-way screws, swap the broken part with the unused part from the second unit, and return the first unit to Home Depot for a refund. It would be a REAL DISASTER if the cable were to break during a REAL fire and trap one of my loved ones in the bedroom. Manufacturer needs to make this unit stronger so it won't fail in an emergency.

There must be a better way to secure our windows, I tried this fire Release Kit for Window Guards following careful all instructions, at the end the result was great and somehow I did another one by fixing with this new version on. My hope is that they keep improving it until it become easier to install

These are not super-easy to install, but I'm an average do-it-yourselfer, and got it done.
Follow the instructions. They work.
You do have to be careful when you trim the cable sheath, so as not to cut the cable, but that cable is tough. If you touch it with the blade, you won't do harm, but try not to. I used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. It was quick and easy.
I had shelves and a chest in the way on my bedroom windows, so I couldn't make a straight shot install, kick plate directly beneath the cable, which is the best way. I put an S-curve in the cable, kick plate near the middle of the window, underneath. It works, but I soaked cable and cable sheath with White Lightning lubricant, a waxy PTFE stuff which works good for bike cables and should last for many years in this application. Some sort of grease on the cable would work too but it's messy and accumulates dirt over time. Slick cables work much better, and from the factory they are pretty dry.
I bought two of them. Test them before you install them, which I didn't. One of them had enough corrosion inside on the lock plates that it wouldn't operate properly, brand new from the factory. It would open but not close. I was thinking "You dummy, now you've got to cut off the one-way bolt heads to remove this and take it back." But I hit the plates with spray lube and let it set for a half hour, then operated it a few dozen times. It works now. So, when the instructions tell you to test them several times, do it. I'd test them at least several times per year, maybe quarterly. If you have kids, that's a good fire drill for them. Kick that plate, open the window, punch that screen and get out.
Keep them lubed with a good spray lube, especially if you live in a rainy, humid climate. Unique Home Designs, I'd pay a few extra bucks if those spring-loaded lock plates were stainless steel. Stronger and wouldn't rust.
A few months after install, the cables stretched a little, and had to kick hard to get the the bars to release, so check and re-tension the cables if you need to.

They're ok
They work better for the small bars. It would be better if there wasn't so much play in the hinges, and seperate cable adjustments. Doing both at the same time is harder cuz they need to be just right. Oh yeah and springs so they pop out better.

Sturdy and flexible
I really like the two-point catch system. I have worked with single point releases in the past and this one is much better. Fairly easy to install with instructions that could use some simplifications. My only concern on appearance is that it was only available in black. Black is a hard color to cover easily.

Flimsy Locks
Guide wire pulled out. Springs on each insert slide to the back. Needs a spacer to stop the slide. Metal clamps inside lock do not open equally binding on insert. Too light for window guards that are connected together for larger windows.

Terrible Quality Avoid At All Costs
Poor Quality, the Bolt which locks into place when the window is secured was welded crooked, had to compensate with where I drilled the holes. Installed the window kit which wasn't that easy to begin with, your drilled holes must be spot on or the window will not close. The final straw was when I had completed installation. After locking the window in place then testing the release, it jammed so bar would not lock in place again. Tried WD-40, oil, pliers, etc to get the lock to release at no avail. Had to slam it on the ground to get it to release, so now if I unlock, I can't relock with out removing the entire locking mechanism from the window frame. How did this ever get past QA? Very poor user experience and shoddy quality DO NOT BUY THIS!

Installation of the Foot Operated Release Kit for proper operation can be difficult, particularly in certain scenarios. Review of existing inventory did not identify crooked welds or other defects that would cause the release to jam, but quality control procedures have been reviewed in detail and compliance is being monitored."

Good to have one for emergency
According to the law, window guards installed in the bedrooms must have a release installed in case of emergency so that the guard can be opened. Therefore, I had to replace the fixed mounting brackets with this type of releases for the bedrooms. The installation was not as simple as I thought. I had to hire a contractor to have them installed. It took more than an hour to have one installed. Overall, the release works as described. To release the wires which control the bullet used to hold the window guard, I had to kick it. That is a good protection because the bullet should not be accidentally released. Good value for emergency.

Top quality product
This product met my needs perfectly for my rent house with custom-made bars on the window. I had to take the bars down and over to the local and cheap welding shop to have square tubing welded across the bars so the brakets supplied in this kit could slide into them. I installed three of these kits in about three hours not counting time to take the window bars down and get them welded. I did all the work myself and it would have been a lot faster with two people.
Everything in this kit is of first quality even down to the screws and bolts unlike so many products I get today I was able to use the provided hardware instead of providing my own. The only item I had to buy was the one-way driver for the one-way screws. I've been needing that anyway and didn't mind spending the $15 for it.
I don't know how the person said they broke this while trying to install it as you would have to do something really stupid. It is made that well.
You are working with heavy steel and drilling through and bolting into studs with this project so you need strength to hold the window bars (mine way about 50 pounds each that I held in place with one hand while drilling with the other) during mounting and you should have some previous experience working on serious projects around the house. If you don't have either, ask your neighbor for assistance and do something nice for him/her. I highly recommend this kit to meet local codes of having a way to unlock the bars to get out in case of a fire.

This product is not compatible with inside-installed window bars.
The fire release kit is not compatible with window security bars installed inside the house.
Also, it broke during a do-it-yourself installation.
Very unsatisfactory.

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, The Foot Operated Release kit should only be used on vertical window guard installed outside the home. For guards mounted inside the window, please see Horizontal Window Guards and the Quick Release Kit.
