Follow the instructions. They work.
You do have to be careful when you trim the cable sheath, so as not to cut the cable, but that cable is tough. If you touch it with the blade, you won't do harm, but try not to. I used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. It was quick and easy.
I had shelves and a chest in the way on my bedroom windows, so I couldn't make a straight shot install, kick plate directly beneath the cable, which is the best way. I put an S-curve in the cable, kick plate near the middle of the window, underneath. It works, but I soaked cable and cable sheath with White Lightning lubricant, a waxy PTFE stuff which works good for bike cables and should last for many years in this application. Some sort of grease on the cable would work too but it's messy and accumulates dirt over time. Slick cables work much better, and from the factory they are pretty dry.
I bought two of them. Test them before you install them, which I didn't. One of them had enough corrosion inside on the lock plates that it wouldn't operate properly, brand new from the factory. It would open but not close. I was thinking "You dummy, now you've got to cut off the one-way bolt heads to remove this and take it back." But I hit the plates with spray lube and let it set for a half hour, then operated it a few dozen times. It works now. So, when the instructions tell you to test them several times, do it. I'd test them at least several times per year, maybe quarterly. If you have kids, that's a good fire drill for them. Kick that plate, open the window, punch that screen and get out.
Keep them lubed with a good spray lube, especially if you live in a rainy, humid climate. Unique Home Designs, I'd pay a few extra bucks if those spring-loaded lock plates were stainless steel. Stronger and wouldn't rust.
A few months after install, the cables stretched a little, and had to kick hard to get the the bars to release, so check and re-tension the cables if you need to.
