I just installed two in my house, hardwired with a communication wire between the two. Besides being the most affordable hardwired dual detector type available, the units were well packaged, seem well made and installed in minutes on my existing circuits; even though I had to undo the wire nuts and put the new connectors on. I tested the units with aerosol smoke both on line voltage and just under battery power. They work flawlessly in both cases and are easily silenced once the detectors have cleared. I really like that both units sound the alarm both under smoke test and when the test button is pushed and can also be silence by pushing the button on one unit. This is important because the upper unit is a good ten feet off the ground. I am not sure how many of these you can interconnect but his feature is a leg saver for those with many units installed on one system. We used to have many false alarms on the kitchen due to cooking. I am anxious to see how the "Silence" function that temporarily reduces the detector sensitivity works. All in all, these seem very good. Time will tell how well they perform.

Bought this for replacement of my problematic Universal Security Instruments IOPHIC smoke, fire,CO and natural gas alarm with battery back-up [Model MDSCN 111], which kept giving false CO after about 6-10 months service. I had 3 of 4 of them go bad [two were replaced, with no hassle by the manufacturer - one of those again went bad!]. I have now replaced each failed alarm with this model smoke and fire alarm with battery back-up. These IOPHIC alarms resist false alarms from cooking and appear to not have the same irritating false alarm failures as the more expensive and capable [smoke, fire, CO and natural gas] models. I would recommend these, however, can no longer recommend the other model:MDSCN111.

Installed easily and seems to be working for now, but time will tell. The included 9V battery, however, is the usual piece of junk that will have the device chirping soon. I took it out and replaced with a 10-year lithium battery.

Can't get them to work properly. One beeps w indication of bad battery. Swapped battery and still beeps. Cannot reach anyone at Universal. After all 3 connected, went into alarm. Had to go to each one and hold the silence for 10 seconds to silence. One still beeps. Too many issues to figure out. Will be bringing them all back.

Good quality, works well, interconnects with the 3 other brands on location, very shrill and piercing alarm. The mount is easy with screw options for various box and other mounting sizes, the base is large so will cover larger holes. The one thing you need to know is that the green LED light is BRIGHT compared to all our other alarms and can be a challenge if you're used to a very dark bedroom. So far we've just been dealing with it, but I may use a sharpie to cover some of the green to dim it in the future (don't black it out, it helps give you status and make sure the alarm is working properly).

  • Best Smoke Alarm on the Planet
  • November 06, 2015

Best smoke alarm on the planet. I have had clients put these in a number of houses that were getting false alarms all the time. Now they have none. In houses where alarms had been ripped out of the ceilings because of false alarms, now the alarms stay put, changing an unprotected house into a safe one. In my own house we had problems every week: humid days, neighbor firing up his wood boiler, dinner being ready, etc. Now we have no problems at all. Plus, I don't have to run around the house looking for a flashing light that tells me which unit is causing the alarm. A push of the button, on ANY alarm will cause only the offending alarm to beep, making it easy to find. This detector also solves the problem of alarms that are out of reach, as I can silence that alarm from one that is mounted at a more convenient height. Their website says this alarm, according to a university study, is the fastest responding alarm out there to detect fast flaming fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. It responds 87% faster (than required?) for slow smoldering fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. Better than both kinds, and the "Microprocessor Intelligence" might be just a cool way to market it, but it really did eliminate all the false alarms in my home, and my clients' homes.

Pros eliminates false alarms, high-mounted alarms can be silenced remotely

I installed this unit using just the power wires as I have no other smoke detectors in the house, so I just left the yellow wire tucked into the outlet box. Simple to install and after a month, no false alarms.
