Polyurethane makes a great sealer to protect your wood floors, table, and other wood furniture. I stained an old table and then put 2 layers of Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane to reinvigorate an old table.

This product did an excellent job and performed as expected. To save yourself a lot of extra work read the label carefully as it indicates you should apply a coat then wait up to 4 hours before applying a second coat and three coats are recommended. If you wait past 4 hours you have to re-sand the entire surface before applying the next coat. I missed that when I applied the first coat, waited a couple of days and then created extra work!

I placed accent walls in my home and used Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane Oil Based Clear Satin to finish the walls. The results have been phenomenal! It takes 3 coats to get the finish that I wanted, however, the directions on the can stated it would. Each coat takes about 4 hours to dry before recoating. Great product!!!

Something is amiss here, John! Our Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane is designed to dry to the touch in 1-2 hours, and it should not have a thick consistency. High temperatures, or low humidity may speed the drying process, reducing the working time. If the polyurethane is very thick in the can, the lid may not have sealed completely after use, causing the product to thicken. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I wasn't too sure about it. I was looking for Minwax, which I have always used, but then remembered HD doesn't carry it anymore. I've heard of Varathane but never used it. Very pleased. I just wish I had sprayed it instead of brushing because I got quite a few brush marks but that's my fault not the poly's fault.

I wish I would have read reviews prior to buying this product. Each coat of this product dried unevenly. Some areas were glossy, some flat. Brush strokes show up as well. I went intending to buy Minwax, but this was the only polyurethane available at Home Depot. I spent hours refinishing a dresser, and it looks terrible. Never again. I am going to sand it off and apply Minwax elsewhere. Rust-Oleum needs to stick with paint products.

Uh-oh, something is amiss here. To ensure the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-based Ultimate Polyurethane, it is important to allow the finish to dry 8 hours before re-coating. Re-coat only when the previous coats have dried clear and feel hard. The coating should no longer feel tacky to the touch, and if any coat has dried more than 12 hours, lightly sand before applying another coat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Wish I could give this zero stars. This is NOT satin. No matter how much you stir during application, this ends up high-gloss. I'll now be sanding and adding a top coat of Minwax satin. Home Depot should not have stopped carrying Minwax.

This is the first time I used this brand (since Home Depot stopped selling Minwax) ... the Polyurethane finish had an inconsistent gloss and 'orange peel' texture. Each coat I added seemed to flatten out the rough orange peel finish in some areas, but then it appeared in new areas. I contacted the seller through their website, added photo and the requested information for help and received no response. I am going to strip off the polyurethane and try a different brand to fix my project. I am also returning the other Varathane products I bought for other furniture to HD ... very frustrating to put so much work into a piece only to have to do it over because of product problems with the final finish. I am also disappointed in Home depot ... my experience with their Behr paint got me to switch all my paint purchases to Home Depot ... there Varathane products are not up to the Behr standards.

Something is amiss here, Tim! Our Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane works best when applied using a good quality natural bristle brush, or lambs wool applicator pad. Sanding with 220 grit sandpaper before the final coat will also ensure an ultra-smooth finish. We will make sure that you receive a reply to your email, and we understand your frustration with this delayed response. We strive to reply to our customers in as timely a manner as possible. You can also give us a call directly at 800-901-0411, and we will be happy to help! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Why HD decided to stop selling Minwax Oil-Based Poly, I have no idea. As previous reviewer mentioned, this poly does not produce a satin finish. I stirred as per instructions, but still got a glossy look (picture shows Varathane and Minwax clear satin finishes on similar stained Douglas Fir board). The application is also not as easy as the Minwax equivalent. I'm going back to get me some Minwax instead.

I purchased this product since my local Home Depot no longer carries Minwax poly. The finish looks good, but is much glossier than the Minwax equivalent. I would not recommend this product if you want a true satin finish.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Ultimate Oil-Based Satin Polyurethane. We recommend stirring this product well prior to applying to ensure an even, satin sheen. If the polyurethane appears to glossy, flattening agents may have settled in the can, and will need to be mixed fully with the coating prior to applying the next coat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
              the best stuff
Oil-based polyurethane is the best way to go. It gives a much tougher finish than water-based, and the smell is really not that bad and goes away quickly. To satisfy government VOC regulations, the can says you cannot spray it, but here is a secret - it sprays just fine! Of course, make sure you have adequate ventilation, and wear protection. Cleans up with mineral spirits. Can be tinted as well. I use it on guitar projects, where it polishes up to a mirror finish - the 'wet' look, with a slight yellowing that I like ( water-based does not yellow. )

              It has been changed
This did not match an adjacent floor I finished last year with an older version of the product. On the plus side, it dries a little quicker and the fumes aren't as bad.

              Make it Last
When you use the right brush and prepare surfaces properly the product is very easy to use. It goes on easy, dries relatively quickly and looks darn good when finished.

Good but very expensive. Used it for a basic project just to seal the wood. Did not cover enough area, too thick.

Do not buy, Product is terrible
I have never used a Varathane product before but I was at HD I bought some. I applied it as thin as possible but was difficult because it felt life you are trying to spread honey. It leveled out ok but no matter how light you try to apply it after a few minutes it sags in the vertical surfaces. It's never had this happen with a Minwax product. I feel sick to have so many hours into a project only to be ruined by an inferior product. Maybe I got a bad batch but It's not worth ever trying again.

Satin vanish in 8oz can produced a gloss finish
8oz can of satin varnish produced a gloss finish. I tried two different cans that were purchased in two different stores at two different times. Both cans of 8oz satin varnish produced a gloss finish. It’s definitely the manufacturer’s issue. They put gloss varnish in satin containers. What a disaster! How could the manufacturer make such a blunder and not issue a recall yet? I purchased 1qt vanish, but this produced satin finish.

We may be able to help! Flatting agents are used to help lessen the sheen of Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane, so it is essential that each can is through stirred prior to each use and often stirred during application. Care needs to be taken to mix around the edges and bottom to ensure any settled resin is incorporated into the product. A new can can be applied over the existing finish to help correct the sheen.
