This stuff is the best "all in one" ever!!!! I LOVE that there is virtually no odor, it glides on smooth and is very forgiving with drips. I sanded and then used this product in my garage on 28 chairs and I am now just finishing my first can! Can't say enough great things about this product, a real time saver and beautiful finish...my chairs look like new.

Great product! Used this for my first staining project. It was easy as it has stain and a top protective coat included. My piece was made out of poplar so I used a conditioner before staining to help it keep a more uniform look. I think it turned out great! Color was rich and process easy!

I want to show a picture of my China Cabinet before and after because I was so impressed by this product that I also used it on an old end table and it looks so good, looks brand new and shiny. My cabinet was Blonde and I turned it Walnut after only 3 coats. It is an amazing easy to use product and no sanding is required at all.

Unfortunately, we tried to stain brand new door. It came out looking so uneven. In fact so terrible we sanded down and have to paint it tomorrow.

Oh no! We do not like to hear about the trouble you're experiencing with the Varathane Stain + Polyurethane, JP. Keep in mind that stain will absorb differently depending on the porosity of the wood. What will often help with that is the use of a wood conditioner such as Varathane Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to help seal soft woods for even color and prevents blotchiness. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Wood-Conditioner-342087/305704375 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

Went on very easy, beautiful color. However, with the poly already included I found it hard to not get brush marks visible with the poly shine. Dried super fast , had great color after 1 coat too, easy cleanup.

The Varathane1 qt. American Walnut Stain and Polyurethane recommended by the CSR in the paint department--along with a high-quality brush did not perform as well as expected. The stain plus poly is a water soluble product. The smooth, fir plywood surface had been sanded and dusted before staining and I used my best stain application technique to progressively smooth the coating onto the surface. The air was dry and the temperature was 68 degrees with a gentle breeze across the covered area I chose to apply the stain. At first the stain and poly applied smoothly. Half way through the process the color within the stain began to clump causing a splotchy finish. No amount of touch-up would correct this problem. I had no choice but to finish the entire surface and abort the job until the water-based poly has dried and I can resand the wood's surface and try again with a stain and coating that is oil based. I can't recommend this product if you desire a fine-wood look to your finished surface.

That's not what we like to hear! To ensure the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain and Polyurethane, we recommend applying with a synthetic bristle brush and applying a thing coat until a uniform film has been achieved. Please keep in mind that it is essential to thoroughly mix the can before use, and as well as often during application to ensure an even color.

Used a expensive brush, left it streaky on first coat on island wood top. Had to sand it down and start over. Used a painting pad, new one, and first coat laid down real nice. Sanded down with 320 grit sandpaper for second coat after 20 hours, came out nice but noticed a small blotch. So I rubbed it with painting pad and it took the second coat off. Do not make any mistake with this stuff and this stuff dries too fast to correct any imperfection. If you want low grade finish, use this stuff.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Jake! For the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Stain and Polyurethane, we recommend using a synthetic bristle brush and applying 2-3 light coats. When applying additional coats, we recommend lightly sanding with 320 grit sandpaper.

Fast Drying, Easy Cleanup, Low VOC, No Odor
It went on easy with a rag. It completely dried within several hours. I put on a second coat shortly after. I will never do stain and poly separately ever again. This is a phenomenal product. Best of all, there was no odor, and low VOC.
