The color is so great! When first applied it scared me how black the stain was but once you spread it looks perfect. I had To actually stain about three times to get my desired color. My shelfs look so beautiful!

I used it to stain some light colored poplar boards for a bookcase. Wow, what a beautiful color. Really brings out the full glory of the wood. Spreads very easily and looked amazing after just one coat. Because it is such a thin stain make sure you have a rag on hand to wipe up what drips down the sides or you will see the drip marks.

Purchased the Classic Gray wood stain for our home made corn hole boards and they turned out great! I made a mountain design and wanted a gray/blue for the sky. This met our needs! I recommend using the color charts provided (hanging near the stain) to chose the color you are looking for, as depending on the wood used, may not look like the color picture on the can.

I was able to do a great job patching up the small scratches that I had on my kitchen cabinets that had occurred over the past 10 years! Love the way it came out. The water based polyurethane coating in matte finish was a great topper to this quick and easy job.

Hits and misses
I applied all stains to new pine that I lightly sanded and conditioned. The golden pecan came out pretty close but the gunstock was nowhere near what I expected. Many shades lighter. I also purchased the weathered gray and it was more like paint than stain. It came out nice but not matching the gray I was trying to achieve. I wasn't planning on so much work and purchases to get the desired results.

Thank you for sharing your experience and providing this feedback on our Varathane Classic Wood Stains. The Weathered Gray Wood Stain may have been one of our Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stains, which apply with more opaque appearance. Both types of stains are wiping stains, and the excess stain must be removed after a few minutes to ensure proper appearance and drying. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Wood Stain Hazelwood Color is Grey
This stain color is awful. It is much more grey than shown on the can. This stain absolutely ruined a beautiful piece of wood I had. Utterly disappointed and now I have to go through the process of removing the stain.

We appreciate your feedback, Dan! Since the wood species used for the application can change the final color of Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain, it is essential to apply in a test area first to ensure the desired color.

Hi Connor, if the stain appears as a solid color, the excess stain will need to be wiped from the surface. Our Varathane Wood Stains are wiping stains, and once the stain has been allowed to penetrate into the wood for a few minutes, the excess stain must be wiped from the surface to ensure proper color and drying. You can reapply some stain to reactivate the stain on the surface, then wipe with a lint-free cloth in direction of the wood grain to remove the excess. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

      Stain won’t adhere to wood
I always use varathane for my projects. This is the first issue I have had. First of the color is a more grey than it shows on the sample. But most importantly, the stain is not adhering to the wood (oak). I ended up re sanding my whole project incase I did something wrong. Stained it once more and it still came out the same.I don’t know if it’s a bad batch? It was extremely watering and the stain didn’t mix well even after mixing for 5 minutes strait. It would just separate as soon as I would stop stirring.

We had our original floors (86 years old) professionally sanded, they were perfect! The stain did not absorb into the wood correctly, there are quite a few spots that are bare. After 2 weeks it still isn't dry & feels tacky. We're in the process of correcting the flaws & hoping we won't have to have them resanded.

We appreciate you sharing your experience, Lynnie! Rust-Oleum Classic Wood Stain needs to be applied to bare wood surfaces and excess stain needs to be wiped away after it has been allowed to briefly penetrate. This will ensure proper drying. When using on a floor, it must be topcoated with a floor polyurethane to ensure the full longevity. If you have further questions or concerns, please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us.
