This is my first use of Varathane brand, since MinWax is no longer available at HD. I was impressed with the evenness of how it coated. I got good penetration into the wood fibers. I let is dry for 24 hours before covering it with the Varathane Spar Urethane.

Surprisingly good cabernet appearance.
I was trying to get a cabernet color, but was only able to get Sedona Red. It turned out perfect just by chance.

    Bring back Minwax!
This new stain does not cover the same amount of material, penetrate, or dry the same as Minwax. Don't be fooled by the in-store display that it's the same. The consistency between cans also varies.

Our Varathane Classic Penetrating Wood Stain is a wiping stain, meaning the excess must be wiped from the surface after it has been allowed to penetrate the bare wood surface for a few minutes. Any stain left on the surface of the wood will not dry, and must be removed using a rag, wiping in the direction of the wood grain. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

The key word is "natural." After applying this stain to a sample piece of pine, it did indeed look like "natural" pine. It goes on as clear as water and does not "stain".

Let's talk about this! The final color of Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain can change depending on the species of wood used for the application. It is also essential to thoroughly mix the can before each use and often during your application to ensure there is no settled pigment in the can.

        Color not as shown
I have tried Varathane wood stain in the color “espresso” for a couple different projects. My first project was the first time I used stain; I thought I wasn’t using it correctly when the color wouldn’t come out as dark as the picture - even after multiple coats! I found an old can of mixwax in my garage in the color “dark walnut.” One coat of the minwax and I knew immediately that this was a much better product.

Let's talk about this! Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain needs to be thoroughly stirred before each use and often during application to ensure the pigment is evenly distributed. Please keep in mind, the wood species used for the application can affect the final color of the stain, so a test application is recommended.

Excellent product! We wanted this to match up a new table to the tone of our maple butcher block. We only did one coat in the picture but 2 coats would get it match up exactly.

It was an amazingly perfect color. Just one coat was perfect for the job I was doing with plenty left that makes me want to find another project to use it on. It went on smooth, dried quick and the color set in real nice. I used it to stain a wooden box to create a treasure chest for my pirate themed wedding.

I am happy with the color of stain and the ease of application. Other reviews have stated the product was thick and gel-like, whereas my product was a water consistency. I applied two coats, allowing it to dry 2 hours between each coat. The stain had a very strong odor, and after drying completely and allowing it to "breathe" for 2 weeks, the odor was still there. I applied 3 coats of Varathane Polyurethane, hoping it would help seal in the odor, which it did not. The odor is strong enough that it fills my living room and is causing headaches. I have read that it may linger for a few weeks (which have already passed) or even months! I have read the only remedy to solve this is to sand it down and start over.....ugh! While I am happy with the look of the finished product, I will not be using this product again.

That is odd to hear, Brenda! Our Varathane Oil-Based Classic Penetrating Wood Stain should have thin consistency as you described, however, the solvent odor typically dissipates completely once the solvents have evaporated from the surface. We need to know more about the application to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

(Weathered Oak) - Beautiful stain color, easy to apply and dries surprisingly fast. I used this stain on a desk top for my daughter. At first the stain had more gray hues to it but after polyeurathane, it appeared more brown. Regardless, I love the finish. The stain is not very thick but soaked really well into the porous parts of the grain. It dries very quickly, the fastest of any stain I have used. Within a few hours I could barely smell it. I found that impressive for an oil-based stain. Of note: the top was red oak sanded to 220 grain and I applied it with a lint-free rag which I find is the best way. I also applied a satin polyeurathane on it.

Easy to use. It is best to use a rag to apply in light coats to get the desired color. If you use a brush it is easy to get too much stain and make it too dark.

Stripped a bookmatched, Pecan veneer dining table top. Used a brand of Dark Walnut (that is not supposed to have wax in it, even though the name has >>>WAX, and could not get the top to look right or even out. I had even bought 3 colors of the Farathane for the wife to pick from, and she liked the >>>wax color. Well....I resanded the stain off (with a thin veneer you are gambling) then used this stain. The first coat left light and dark grain (I did not use a conditioner because I wanted to top dark to match the two factory leafs.) but by using multiple applications, and wiping the darker areas heavily and first, the top matched the factory coloring. Oh, did I mention that the other stain seems to build after the second coat, almost like there is not real pore pentration, as it if it is sealing the wood? Wiping it off completely does not get darker wood after the second or third coat. This one does seem to darken on progressive coats. I have a few gallons of different colors of the >>>wax stain. I will use them as I can, but I may be a convert to Varathane stain. I have not shot the final lacquer coats over it yet (the factory suggested waiting a week for it to dry completely before using lac finish) but I will be surprised of the stain causes any finishing problems. Good for the beginner or the pro, in my opinion. Pictures show unfinished but stain table with factory stained and finished leaf in the center.

We recently converted our steps from carpet to hardwood. We wanted a stain with a grey undertone but also with some brown in it to warm up the room. This Ebony color was perfect! Floors will be next :-)
