Wood buy this product again
As a, newer, DIY/Woodworker Hobbyist I found the product easy to apply and work with overall. In the photo you’ll see an, in progress, tiered plant stand. I used the entire 8oz of this product on a 32x12x42” project with 2 coats and some touchups. To get this result I first sanded with 220 grit then wiped with Klean Strip mineral spirits, found by the paint in HD. Waited about 5 minutes before wiping first coat, applied with foam brush. Second Coat, applied with brush, dried almost immediately after applying (suspect cold temperature produced results) and because of this there was barely any wiping. Project is ‘wood’ smooth to touch and the gloss finish accents the woods’ natural look. Wood buy this product again.

    Ruined my stools
Bought the black poly stain and color went on great to a pair of counter stools. Color was deep and rich and covered as i hoped it would with a ‘thin’ coat. HOWEVER it is still sticky over 24 hours and leaves a fingerprint wherever i touch it. Even put this in a room with a heater on high for 2 hours and still slighty stickey. I dont know what to do and really upset at how poorly this perfomed.

We appreciate your feedback! Please keep in mind, our listed dry times are based on temperatures being 70-80°F (21-27°C) and 50% relative humidity. Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, or poor air circulation can extend the dry times. If Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane is not hardening up, please give us a call at 800-901-0411 for further assistance.

      Looks awesome with proper coating
Ill admit there is a slight learning curve with this product as with any poly product. Prep your surface per the directions and use a very thin coat to start. If you want it darker lightly 220 sand and apply another thin coat. Repeat till happy.

        Filled with specks
This "stain" covered up all the wood grain in my pine. The color is uneven, despite being a single layer. There is foreign matter in the stain which now coats the surface. It was NOT sawdust. A second layer would be incredibly dark. Plus it took DAYS to dry. While it is cold out, 24 hours after and the single coat is sticky. I will never use this again.

We appreciate your feedback, Megan! Prior to each use, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane and Stain is thoroughly stirred. To ensure the most uniform color, we recommend applying in the direction of the grain with a good quality, natural bristle brush. If needing further assistance, please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us.

Awesome color! I used it to create white wood trim stained borders for a rustic look. It allowed for some of the wood grain to show through, which is exactly what I wanted. Loved this product and would use it again. Definitely recommend!

          Purple....
My mix was thorough, so don't lay that at my feet. It's on white oak, oak, mahogany(8ft butcher block top counter)...so yah, it's purple. I wanted red hues, not a graple color scheme. YES, I did a large test area on the bottom side. NO, I would not recommend it. The image another customer left, look close, purple. 3-4 coats of dark purple. I think the can needs to be renamed. The images are 1 in front of the window, 2 2ft from the window on the side. Don't make it out as an attack, i love home Depot, but the stain was a let down and IS going back

We appreciate your feedback! It is essential to apply Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane in a test area first because the wood species used for the application can affect the final color. Please keep in mind, this is not a food-grade coating and not recommended for use on countertops.

            So Disappointed
I decided to try Varathane premium poly stain on an oak dry sink top. The first coat went on Very thick and the second one went on blotchy. I started researching on how to fix this and sanded it lightly and tried another coat. It just kept getting worse. I started researching on how to fix this and sanded it lightly and tried another coat. It just kept getting worse. It’s been four days of working on this and I decided to check out some of the reviews to see what I could possibly be doing wrong. I wish I would’ve read them before I purchase this product. We love the Home Depot, but this is a huge disappointment. I’m not sure where to go from here.

We understand your frustration, Jackie. To ensure the best finish, Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane needs to be applied with a good quality, natural bristle brush or applicator. The product also needs to be stirred before each use and often during the application. This will ensure the most even and consistent appearance. Our recommendation is to sand or strip back down to bare wood and reapply. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
              Does Not Perform as Advertised
This product is so awful that I'm only going to hit the highlights. 1. It requires an impossibly thin and perfectly even coat. However, it has the viscosity of warm caramel. It's so thick that it constantly pulls the bristles out of the brush. 2. It's much closer to paint than to a stain/poly. It pools and runs and, because of the aforementioned thickness, you can't brush it out. 3. Because of both the thickness and excessive pigment, getting it to go on even is an utter fantasy. Forget it. 4. It's supposed to dry within an hour or so. Well, it's 24-hours later and we can't even sand it off because its gumming up 60 grit sandpaper. In a nutshell, this product ruined the shelving project for our kitchen. We have to start over. This product will not save you time, nor money, nor effort. It will, in fact, cost you far more of those things because you will have to throw it away... along with anything it touches. I tried calling Rustoleum to get some advice on how to salvage this project. But, they were unavailable to talk and allowed me to request a call back from the next available representative. And, they did call back. Three hours later. Home Depot answered the phone and offered to refund the purchase of this disastrous product, as well as comp me the caustic stripper and other tools needed to try to at least save the wood. So, at least there's that. Do. Not. Buy. This. Product.

The product is very good, I'm giving it just 3 stars because as a final coat is necessary to apply a clear coat of polyurethane if you like a real smooth surface. It is the 3rd piece of furniture that I build and use this paint. The surface without that final coat feel "rough". I'm using spray guns to apply it. I recommend the use of this product.

Thank you for the feedback, Charlie. For the smoothest finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain + Poly, make sure to lightly sand between coats with 320 grit sandpaper, especially before the last one. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

                Poor quality compared to minwax
I bought two of these Poly stains Black cherry It takes many hours to dry so inevitably some small dust speck lands on there as many times as I mixed it well then used new high-quality brushes or lambswool applicator I always ended up with some "whiteish" looking streaks-I never had good coverage. I also applied a wood conditioner initially. An expensive and hugely time-consuming proposition as a result. Very poor quality based on other reviews - a pattern when 50% of reviewers are not satisfied.

We have old oak cabinets in our kitchen that just needed a refresher. We removed the doors and drawers, we steam cleaned and scrubbed everything really well to make sure we got off the years of hidden dirt. I lightly sanded a few really bad spots and then used this to refinish everything. They look like new again. Very easy to use and very forgiving.

                  Looks pretty good !
Thus was my first attempt at refinishing wood and I needed a quick process. I was able to finish entire project in one day and I’m pleased with the results. Although the finished project is not perfect, which I attribute to my own inexperience with refinishing, it Was easy and I now have confidence to try more refinishing projects. One word of caution, this dries really fast so you must work quickly!

Beautiful Results! Wonderful product , I re-stained my entire kitchen cabinets they were old and pale ,and this poly gave it the touch it needed so shiny and beautiful, after sanding the old varnish and preparing the wood I applied two coats of the antique walnut gloss stain, the more coats the better and darker it gets, but for me two coats was enough. I can't believe the beautiful Results I obtained with this poly couldn't be happier.

                    Horrible stain
We bought the poly stain in black to stain our bare interior french doors. We did all of the prep work and we followed the instructions to the letter....the stain was clumpy, wasn't adhering to the wood, and was horrible to work with. After reading reviews online, we ended up dipping a rag in mineral spirits and removing as much of the stain as we could, sanding, and trying again with Minwax. MUCH better results this time around. Trust your gut--if it's what you used in shop class in high school to make a chintzy wall sconce that still hangs in your grandma's kitchen, it's what you should you use now. Kudos to Home Depot for the refund--they're thinking it was a bad can, but I'll stick with Minwax.

This is the worst product ever
This is the worst product I’ve ever used in my life. It dries so patchy no matter what you do. It is not user friendly at all and will without a doubt ruin whatever project you have the misfortune of putting it on. Please do not buy this and stick to a separate stain and then polyurethane. I will never buy this brand ever again in my life since it ruined my desk.

Don't waste your time and money with this garbage..trust me. How on earth someone thought that this would be a good idea to mix stain with poly, is beyond comprehension. There is absolutely no way to brush this product on white soft wood, ie. aspen and not have thick areas of pigment along with brush strokes. Come on Varathane, get your stuff together...go back to school.

That is not what we like to hear! Though the first coat may appear uneven, after several thin coats the color should even out as the thickness of the polyurethane increases. Our Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane in One applies best with a good quality, natural bristle brush or lamb's wool applicator pad. Brush marks may be removed by lightly skimming the surface with the brush before the coat dries. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I used this stain on bare 2x4s that I had made into a desk/work bench and liked the look after just one coat. Easy to apply and get a uniform look without some of the dark patches you sometimes get when more stain is in one spot than another. Also used it in a small room with not great ventilation and the fumes were never an issue.

Waste of time and destroyed my dresser
Trust your gut and don’ try this 2 in 1 finish. I have followed directions on the can to the letter and this product refuses to dry/cure and has ruined a dresser that i was refinishing for my wife. The dresser heads to the dump today. Check out the photos below- it has been more than 10 days since the last coat. I recommend that if you want to stain and poly that you do the steps separately. This doesn’t save any time and doesnt cure. Severely disappointed.
