I use this urethane as a final coat over water based fluorescent pain on 1 oz lead jig lures. I takes nicks on rocks during vertical jigging and the water based paint never chips. I used up a small can this year over a 9 year period and bought the same product. Meets my needs and we catch some fish :-)

Would have prefered the water-based option I have used in the past but not available when I purchsed this product… three coats over furniture semi-gloss paint should help protect flat shelf/cabinet top surfaces for a while...

This was my first time using poly. I used it for my stair project. I applied with a cheap foam brush. Let it dry for about 6-12 hours. Took 220 grit sandpaper back and forth and reapplied. I did 3 coats on all steps. I’m giving 4 stars because I used up my first can and bought a second can of the same finish, clear satin. The second can came out semi gloss. The cans were from different batch numbers. Returned it. Buy from the same batch is my advice!

I’m a diy homeowner. I opted to refinish my entire house including stairs. The most difficult part was the sanding and clean up between 40 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit. 120 grit. Once stained I could already see how beautiful the floors would be. Once I applied the clear gloss it was next level gorgeous! The oil based finish has a strong odor but it’s thick, self leveling, and dries pretty quickly. Open lots of windows. I’m an early bird up at 4am. So by 12 noon I was already into 2nd coat drying. I’m so glad I did this myself. So pleased.

I have used enough poly over the years to know about stirring. Now with 2 coats of satin on the table, it’s glossy. Can’t trust it for another coat so will have to buy a different brand or try for a rubbed finish. It should have been an easy and rewarding project!

I used for sea shells not wood. Shells are porous so I suspected it would make a good clear coat. Shells are actually kind of gross & I like to make things with them. The goop did what I wanted it too.

The best varnish I ever used and dry time is fast to where I can apply 2 coats in one day

Excellent Clear Coat

I use this for a rather non-standard purpose - I make archery targets by painting them on cardboard, then coat them with Varathane to make them water resistant for outdoor use.

Easy to apply, high gloss in one coat

I built a fireplace surround out of 1x material mitered and assembled into three sided "beams". To create a hand-hewn aged timber look and I attacked the beams with a hatchet, Restorer Tool with 4" 80grit nylon brush, Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator and several different water-based dyes. Because of the water-based dyes, I needed to use an oil-based coating to protect the finished product. This worked beautifully and didn't create a plastic look to the timber.

I like working with this product, it is durable and make the wood look nice. I built some cabinets in my garage and decided to leave the natural wood and stain it with Varathane clear gloss and they turned out nicely.

Easy application, might need more than one application.

Easy to work with. I tinted it with some gel stain when i wanted a cabinet to be a little darker overall. The shine was more glossy than satin. I used wet 00 steel wool to knock back some of the shine. This also resulted in a smoother finish to the touch. Wish HD carried the more flat sheen.

As I reported before, this product is off-gassing fumes for weeks. I let this dry for over a week before installing the stair railing that I finished with it. Rust-Oleum's, "solution" to my comment was to wash it with soapy water. This had about zero chance of doing anything, since that's not how finishes work. To be fair, I gave it a try, not that I hadn't already attempted this obvious but useless, "fix" already. Surprise surprise, still reeking of volatile organics. Stay away.

Perfect and Awesome results

The rim on the lid that you use to pry the lid off is very flimsy. I could not pry it off using a paint can pry bar- the lid was in so tight that the rim became totally mangled. I had to resort to a pair of pliers to get it off, which totally destroyed the lid. Never had this problem before.

I love this satin finish and used it recently on a sofa table. The finish goes on quite shiny but dries to a nice sheen after a while. It leaves a smooth finish to the touch and brings out the wood as opposed to lacquer covering up and coating like plastic. I'd highly recommend and will purchase again.

This is my favorite oil based polyurethane to use. There is another very popular one that is also good but it always worries me as it goes on milky and I just cant seem to get past that characteristic.

I'm heading out to buy minwax polyurethane at another store. Varathane was to thick doesn't go on smooth worst I've ever used . I think Home Depot use to carrot mineable but not now.

Provides a very good finish. Works best with two coats

This leaves such a beautiful finish. I thin this product and apply with a rag and basically rub it in and sand smooth between applications. Hopefully you can see in the photo the kind of finish that is possible.
