That is not what we like to hear! Different wood species may cause a slight variance in the color of our Varathane Summer Oak Stain and Polyurethane, however, the color should not be extremely different from the product label as you have described. I used this for the first time and it is the best ever! Sometimes when you combine poly or other clear coats to a stain it can feel gummy or hard to apply. Not this, it is smooth and thin and turns out amazing!

It went on easy & smooth. When I wanted it darker I just did another coat. Didn't need to put an coat of poly on top since poly was already in the stain.

They should label these clearly if they are for interior or exterior.I used this on an outdoor project before realizing that it was labeled in very small print that this is for indoor use.

If wanting to protect an outdoor wood surface, the use of a spar urethane is recommended. Rust-Oleum Varthane Spar Urethanes are available as a water-based or oil-base that offers different finishes that can be used outdoors over Rust-Oleum Varathane stains!

Perfect for the job
I redid the interior of my travel trailer and replaced all interior structure covering using this product. Turned out Better than expected.
