  • The best stain I have used - but terrible color
  • February 12, 2014
  • Recommended Product

I do a lot of woodworking in my spare time. Finishing is my favorite part of any project. I apply anything form professional grade sprayed finishes to hand rubbed oil finishes. I don't use stain often, but when I do I am very selective. This 3x stain is amazing stuff. Thick like a gel stain so it is perfect for blotch prone wood like maple and cherry. Coverage really is "3x" I've used gel stains before and this stuff is unreal. I tried a sample on some scrap maple - which is notorious for blotching. Without any washcoat or pre-stain, this went down beautifully with a foam brush. It wiped off clean and dried quick The only issue is the color. It is very purple. Even on a dark wood like black walnut, it shows up a deep purple color. I have already purchased a few different colors of the Varathane 3x and can't wait to use them. I was that impressed.

Pros Even Application, High Quality of Material, Easy to Apply, Easy Instructions, Good Coverage, Easy to Clean, Easy to Use, Dries Quickly, no blotching on blotch prone species Cons way to purple

  • Good weathered look, but a little light

This stain is pretty standard as far as application goes. I ended up applying two coats, even though the can says color can be achieved in one coat. The results were nice and even, with the grain contrasting well in the pine I applied it to. It dries pretty quickly too. However, the result was a little lighter than I had hoped for. The can shows a nice dark gray color, but my pine stained much lighter. I suppose oak or walnut would come out close to the color shown on the can. I sanded the workpiece with 220 grit prior to application, so maybe stopping at 180 grit would allow a little better penetration. I did not apply a pre-stain wood conditioner because I wanted the darker color. Although it wasn't as dark as I would have liked, I was pretty happy with the evenness of the results without the conditioner, especially since I was working with pine.

We wanted to replace our carpet stairs, we bought your stair treads with risers. We used Varathane black cherry stain. With one qt we did 15 stairs and risers and one coat worked just fine. We did have enough to do a second if needed.

  • Exactly what I was looking for.

I decided to update and stain my bathroom cabinets. They were regular wood that came with the house. I have a gray/white tone going throughout my house. Instead of spending over 1k to get a new piece installed I decided to start a DIY project. I was scared due to precious review that they look blueish once done. That was not the case at all for me. It was either between this gray or the lighter carbon gray they have available but I felt that would be too light so I went with the weathered. Once everything was sanded down and ready to go, staining was an easy and fun process. This stain immediately soaked into the wood and for the whole piece I didn't even use a quarter of the small can. I still have so much available that I might just stain all other cabinets in the house the same color with the same can. I let dry for over a day just because I did not want any fingerprints. After it dried, I put on a matte protective coat cause I didn't want it to be shiny. One thing I would recommend is to do as much staining as you can in a garage or outside. I did it all in my master bedroom and the odors are really really strong and took days to get out.

This product is a must have for anyone wanting to refinish any piece with an existing finish. I had planned on purchasing a gel stain even though the many videos that I viewed on line stated that it can take three, if not four coats/steps to achieve a dark finish (and it still may not be as dark as desired). Luckily, Home Depot did not stock the darkest color gel stain so I decide to try this product. That was my lucky day. In one coat this stain covered previously sealed wood, bare wood and paint spots uniformly and with minimal effort. I only wish I knew about this product years ago with all of the refinishing I have done over the years.

This stain is a really neat alternative to the traditional "wood tone" colors. As with all stains, it looks different on different types of wood depending on how porous the gain is. Make sure to test it on scrap before applying it to your project. In my experimentation I also determined that it could be thinned with mineral spirits to create a "lighter" effect. In the photo attached, the bottom row of samples was stained with a thinned down version of the product.

  • Nice white stain

Used ~ 1/2 qt. to "whitewash" a pine bed frame (made with off-the-shelf lumber from HD), wanting the grain and knots to show through. Went on easily. The drying time spec may be a little misleading. Say's it'll dry after 1 hr which is probably adequate for finish coating. I didn't finish coat it and it took about 24 hrs to "cure" to the point of where some of the pigment would not rub off. Used dispoable foam brush, washed my hands w/salad oil and dish detergent.

Pros Even Application, Easy to Apply, Easy Instructions, Good Coverage, Easy to Use, Looks Great Cons drying time longer than stated

This stain sat on the shelf for a while before I was brave enough to use it. Staining is not something I am good at. I usually talk my sister into doing it for me. But I was able to get good results using this stain. It is easy to apply, and it seams like the foam brush is never going to run dry. This can is going to last through several staining projects! Now I just need to get it in more finishes.

  • VARATHANE MAKES AN EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCT

MINWAX oil based wood finish has been my go to interior wood stain for staining door and window moulding, etc. but after trying VARATHANE'S black cherry wood stain I believe I may have a new go to wood stain. I am very satisfied with the one coat even finish that the VARATHANE wood stain produced when I stained some quarter round moulding. I can not wait to use this stain on future projects that need staining.
