Awful
If I could give negative stars I would. I’ve been using the Minwax touch up pens for years. For some reason I tried Varathane this time. It’s awful. It’s not a stain, it doesn’t soak in. My table looks like a child touched it up. With the Minwax I let the stain sit on the scratches for a couple of minutes and then wipe it off and you can’t even tell if there was a scratch. With the junk Varathane it looks like a marker was used. Unfortunately I also used this product on my hardwood floors.

Something is amiss here! Our Varathane Touch Up Markers contain actual wood stain, and should be applied, the wiped away as you described. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to get to the bottom of this, and make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Works good for very small touch ups.
Works ok on scratchs and very small areas of touch up. Does not match color exactly -it is darker and has a "marker" luster to it but not as bad as compared to a Sharpie or other perminent black marker. Stands out like sore thumb on any touch up more than very small -even after recoating with urethane.

Golden Oak perfectly matched my doors
Picked the Golden Oak color up in store with little hope it would work for my doors that have seen a lot of abuse. The stain comes out easily and with a light dab covers up the dings perfectly. In the attached photo, I've touched up the left door only - it used to look as bad as the right door.

      Great Product
Easy to use and great for covering high traffic wear on wood flooring. Dries fast and color blended in nicely.

        Matches Well
We were skeptical, but after having a zipper get caught under a chair leg and put a deep scratch in thw floor, we tried it. The color matches well and it looks shockingly inconspicuous.

          Pleasantly surprised
I didn't think that this was intended to cover large areas like you see in the picture, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I am very pleased with the result. This is the red mahogany color, but I'm sure that the other shades would give similar results.

Over the years the baseboards of our steps between the first and second floors got various small scratches. The golden oak stain was the perfect color match for this application. It was very easy to apply. Worked so well that we are going to buy another pen and tackle our kitchen cabinets (need a darker shade for the kitchen)..

This is the best touch up pen I have found. It has very strong color, penetrates the wood, and is more like a permanent marker. Other touch up pens I have used are more oil based and the color smears off right away.

This red oak stain marker was the perfect solution to covering scratches, lighter colored wear areas and rub-off spots on our old 70s vintage, "fake" woodgrain particle board cabinets. For the most part, the cabinets still looked good except for the various wear marks. I had tried other markers before, but they didn't cover well. This marker covered and blended perfectly. All the marks just disappeared. And it is so easy to apply--just like coloring with a marking pen. My cabinets look like new!

We just got a dark wood mid century chair, for the most part in pretty good condition, but did have a couple spots that needed help, I matched up the chair to as close as I could find pen at Home Depot. I am posting a before and after. The only problem I had with this pen is the dark walnut was very dark. I used it on a black cabinet as well and it did a better job at hiding that scratch than the chair. Either way, very happy with the out come, Great touch up tool.

I used this Varathane Touch-Up Marker on a few worn areas of an old chest. The color is easy to apply. On the areas I applied it, I rubbed it into the surrounding area to help blend the color. The color dries fairly quickly but it cleans up easily before it dries. This marker works great on worn areas but can also color scratches that expose raw wood. This marker is inexpensive and great to have on hand to keep furniture looking new.

We are planning on doing a lot of home improvement around our house, so i have been picking up supplies that we will need for our projects. This is one of the products I thought would make some of the touch-ups easier. However, I'm not convinced that this is a good product. I tried it on 3 different wooden pieces of furniture, and I didn’t like the results. Just buying a quart of stain and a paintbrush would work 10 times better. This Marker also leaks, so I had to put it in a plastic bag after trying it. Overall, I do not like this product 1 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this product.

This review is on the Varathane Red Oak Wood Stain Touch-Up Marker. I have a red oak wood floor in my formal living and dining room that has some light scratches and some rather deep gouges. This marker happened to be a great color match and worked really well on the light scratches with one application virtually making them disappear. The deeper gouges were obviously a different story. I had to use several appliations and rubbing it in deeper with a rag which definitely made them look a lot better. For the price and the job it did I give it a big thumbs up.

When I remodled my kitchen I installed solid cherry cabinets and brazailian cherry floors. I love the look but I keep finding little scratches and knicks that, to me are obvious, but my wife does not (seem to) notice. Anyhow I have a small can of touchup stain, but it's so difficult/messy to get it properly stirred for a touchup of a small knick. So I too ignore them, until it's a project to fix them all. Well I've found an answer I can keep handy in a drawer. This Varathane marker "pen" does a great job with simple touch-ups. You push down a little and it increases the flow of the stain, hold it upside down, press it hard on a surface and you can see it flow, press more gently and it just gets the tip wetter. So you control the flow, you can use it as little paint brush, or just a spread a tiny drip in a knick. And there is hardly any smell, I open my touchup can inside, and you can tell immediatly, this marker has a little "stain" oder, but it's not substancial - yea!! The marker case is a very solid plastic (not bendable), so it's not going to crack, break or puncture. It's expensive per oz, but your paying for the simple flexibility it offers.

I am in the process of remodeling a kitchen with cherry upper and lower cabinets. Some new cabinetry was added and new crown molding and trim was also installed as part of this project. I needed to touch up some minor scratches and blemishes on the existing cabinets as well as on the newly cut edges of the new 1/4” cherry plywood kickboard skins. This Varathane cherry color stain marker pen is exactly what I was looking for. To use, shake vigorously for 20 seconds or so, then remove the cap and gently press the felt tip onto a scrap piece of wood or a cloth several times until the tip is soaked with the stain. Then I touched the blemished spots with the tip and immediately wiped off any excess. I did the same with the cut edges of the 1/4” plywood. The color blended perfectly with the rich cherry color of the cabinets. I would challenge anyone to find the small chips and fine scratches that were touched up with this Varathane marker. Excellent product that I fully endorse. Varathane also produces these touch-up markers in other colors.

This marker works decently to fill in scratches and nicks in wood furniture. It takes awhile to get the stain flowing to the tip of the marker but once it's there it works fine. I used it to cover a nick on a table and it didn't cover one hundred percent but no one but me would ever notice. It actually covered better than it looks in my pics. I wish the tip was a finer point, but other than that I like it.

While i want to give a rating of 5 and a happy rating, i waited a while for this to come in. I cannot give it a 5 rating think the heat has something to do with my marker. Now Varathane makes very good products, But this markers tip will only go so far no matter what i do and not budge. And the fluid does not want to come out that good. I really sincerely believe it has something to do with the heat it is hot here right now. I have pictures to show how far the tip will go so you can see. And yes i do recommend this marker, i just happened to get a lemon which sometimes happens, But i still believe in Varathane Products. If they send another one, i will do another review on this product, and give it high marks. I am disappointed but sometimes things happen.

Hmm, something is amiss here. Please keep in mind that the dry times of Rust-Oleum Varathane Touch Up Marker may be affected by temperature, humidity, and ventilation. The surface should be properly prepared by sanding and conditioning the wood if it is a soft wood like pine, fir, or maple. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Impressive! This marker is perfect for minor scratches or blemishes. It is not meant for deep gouges, however. It’s designed to color - not to fill. That’s what wood filler is for. Assuming you select the proper color, when you’re done and everything dries, you won’t be able to tell there was a problem there previously. I’ve got a dark cherry roll top desk that has scratches and gouges from being moved a number of times and being hit by my desk chair. My plan is to fill the gouges with wood filler that accepts stain and when it dries, use a fine grit sandpaper and then use this touch-up marker on the scratches and filled gouges to make the desk look new again. The stain was exactly the right color! When you first remove the cap and press the tip down, make sure that you have something underneath that won't let any excess stain bleed through and some type of rag or paper towel - just in case too much comes out! It dries in about 30 minutes with a satin like finish. No need for anything else! The applicator tip lets you put the stain exactly where you want it! If your hand isn’t as steady as it used to be, don’t worry. Wipe any excess right off with a soft cloth and you’ll be fine. The marker contains just over an ounce of stain, so don’t expect to have enough to refinish your dresser or night table! It’s strictly for touch-up work and it does a great job covering minor scratches. Another bit of advice – make sure that the area where you use this is well ventilated and not near a heat source because the stain and vapor are highly flammable and can cause eye irritation. Most importantly, be sure to keep it out of the reach of children.

These touch-up markers are easy-to-use and convenient, but not always the right choice for furniture touch-ups. It's good to keep matching markers around for small scratch touch-ups; it takes no time at all to color in a minor scratch or chip. If the scratch is substantial, however, this probably isn't the right touch-up method (you may need something that also has some "fill" to it). Before and after pics attached of a couple of deep scratches on a cheap piece of furniture - it definitely helps, but can't hide that much scratch.
