Reasonable Wine RefrigeratorAfter an exhaustive search, we decided on this wine refrigerator. It is not the highest quality available; but, the much more expensive units were more than we wanted to spend. The power usage is equivalent to most other units. The appearance of the unit is similar to many other brands, making me wonder if there are only a few companies making them for a large number of marketers. As mentioned in other reviews, the unit makes some noise, about the same as our side-by-side Kitchen Aid refrigerator. However, the compressor does not run frequently. The interior fan that circulates air operates about every 18 seconds, 18 on and 18 off. This frequent operation seems unnecessary; but, we got accustomed to it and do not notice it when out of the kitchen.
Installation in the trash compactor space was easy and the unit looks very nice. The shelves are bamboo with a stainless cover on the front edge. They are not adjustable; but, are removable to accommodate larger bottles or for cleaning. The unit will only hold 33 bottles if they are the exact size and shape bottle for which the interior was designed. We removed one shelf to allow storage of three champagne bottles on the bottom shelf. With this configuration and a few "non-conforming" sizes, it will hold about 20 bottles. This appears to be a common situation for most refrigerators.
The unit has only been in operation for a couple of months, so I cannot comment on its long-term reliability. Setting the temperature is easy and the buttons lock after changes are made. This prevents accidental changes or turning the unit off by bumping into the control section at the top of the front. The interior light can be set off or on all of the time.
Considering the comments of other reviewers about many other makes and models, and the low price of this unit, we purchased a five year warranty from Home Depot for $100. The manufacturer's warranty is one year, so the additional coverage is only four years - not five. However, since most problematic appliances fail in the first few years, $25 per year seemed reasonable. An appealing advantage of the Home Depot warranty is they are the point of contact for any problems and handle all interface with the manufacturer. Comments from other reviewers noted dealing with some manufacturer's was a real pain, and expensive if they had to pay the freight to return the defective unit. Overall, my wife is happy and I feel that we have made a reasonable decision that will take care of our needs for five years and hopefully many more.
