I was looking for an air purifier for the baby's room that could be set to run on a schedule. This WiFi-connected model does exactly that, and overall, I'm very pleased with it.
Here's what I like about the Winix NK105
(1) WiFi connection and smart phone app allow you to monitor air quality in the room from afar.
(2) Even better, the, WiFi connection and smart phone app allow you to program a schedule. This is a brilliant feature that you just won't find on non-WiFi models. I schedule it to clean the air for two hours before bedtime, so the room is fresh when baby is put down to sleep. No need to enter earlier to turn it on!
(3) Small footprint means it can be placed in a corner of the room.
(4) It's marketed as removing bacteria - other air cleaners don't mention this, and I found this a compelling feature. I hope it works, as I'm not really able to test it. I can tell, however, that the air is "crisper" after the machine has run for a while.
(5) Made in South Korea, which says "quality" to me versus products made in China.
(6) Excellent smartphone app, with logical controls and no crashes or errors
Here's what I didn't like as much:
(1) WiFi connection took a few tries with my phone. At first, the phone could not see the NK105's WiFi signal (which is required for initial setup before the NK105 is connected to a router).
(2) While the footprint is very compact, this is by no means a small air purifier. In fact, I was surprised at how big it was overall given that it's only rated for 320 sq ft. Another model I have from a competing brand is about the same size overall (shorter but wider), and is rated for much more square footage. I think the problem is that a large fan simply doesn't fit in a narrow cylinder, and despite being tall it operates more like a smaller unit.
(3) WAY too many lights! Please, Winix, redesign this. Perhaps to some consumers, the LED lights are viewed as a nice feature, but it was very surprising to find that even when the NK105 is completely off, it still has one bright LED on (the WiFi indicator). Even "Sleep" mode only turned off the top light while leaving all the others on. Strange!
(4) The controls are a little hard to use, as selecting modes requires pressing one button to cycle through a number of modes, but the mode indicator lights aren't on top next to the button, they're on the front of the unit, which you can't see if you're standing over it. Again, I think this is just a result of designing it to have lots of lights all over the unit, which might be attractive to some users, but not to me.
(5) At full power, it's very loud. This may be due to the fact that it has a smaller fan that must spin faster than other wider units.
So overall, it's a very good product, but some design choices don't seem ideal. The last thing I'll say is the marketing slogan on the box "Clean your air from anywhere" is technically possible, but a little bit silly. The real value of the WiFi feature is not monitoring the air quality, or cleaning the air, when you're not home, but being able to program a scheduled cleaning when you ARE home! That's why I ultimately recommend the product, despite it being just a bit too loud and way too bright!
Pros: Lots of Features, Stylish
