Bought a can yesterday and was surprised by the cloudiness of the content. Dries too fast to level and then stays gummy for a couple of hours. Not sure if I got an old can…

Mislabeled can
This was amber shellac in a clear can, or either very old. Not even close to other batches.

I have used Zinsser Amber Shellac before and am happy with it. I needed a clear shellac for the chestnut vanity I am restoring, so I bought Zinsser Clear. It really makes the grain pop. One big plus with these products is the fact that it dries so quickly. I'm quite happy with it.

This stuff is old school, but I use it to seal wood before I paint. The surface can easily be sanded before you paint, which helps for a smooth finish. And you use less paint.

I've used this on a pine picture frame and a Mahogany jewelry box. It has been very pleasant to work with, leaves a uniform coat with very few bubbles or blotchiness, and subsequent coats leave a glass-like surface. It does take quite a few coats to get there though. Also, this product is not recommended for use where it may get wet, polyurethane or other products are better suited there.

Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is easy to use, quick drying and provides a beautiful finish. Proof of its beauty is seen in this photo, the after picture of a trunk from 1864 that was stripped of its paper covering and finished with Zinsser shellac. I have been using this product for over 15 years and won't use any other.

Love This Stuff
I have used polyurethane varnish for many years on most projects. I recently remodeled a bathroom and wanted to try something different. The scoop on shellac has it as more water-resistant than polyurethane, so I decided to give it a try.
This stuff goes on easily, and it has less of a tendency to drip than polyurethane. I presume that;s because it dries faster, which means you have to work a little faster -- not much faster, but noticeably so. The nice thing about it is that, if there's an imperfection in your work, a little wipe-down with denatured alcohol smooths it out and you simply recoat it. Easy. Of course, alcohol will work it's "magic" on shellac whether you want it to or not, so it's probably not a good finish for a cocktail table or bar. Again, if accidents happen, spot repairs can be done with shellac much more easily than with varnish.
One more thing I like: two coats will give a nice, glossy finish. After mine cured, a quick, VERY light once-over with some 0000 steel wool brought the gloss down to match woodwork in adjoining rooms. Very happy with the result.
BONUS: Natural, non-toxic when dried.

I use this to prevent the "blotching" which occurs on most beautiful hardwoods such as oak, cherry (especially), mahogany, walnut, etc. I have tried many approaches over the years to prevent blotching, but nothing works as well as Bulls Eye Clear Shellac. I usually dilute it 50%, to get a product that soaks as deep into the wood as possible. It dries very quickly, so you can easily get 4 coats on in a single day. Also, you can apply it with a white non-abrasive pad, then wipe it off with paper towels, so the application of the shellac is simple and fairly fool-proof.
The one thing is that shellac naturally has wax in it, something like 5%. this "Clear" shellac has not been dewaxed, so it too has the wax in it. Therefore, there are some finishes you should not put on top of it. So if you are uncertain about whether the finish you are applying will adhere to the Clear, after sealing the wood with the Clear, you can put a coat of Bulls Eye 100% dewaxed shellac over the Clear; being dewaxed, almost any finish will adhere to it.
