Not carried in the store. Doesn't have wax in it. Works great to use as a pre-sealer/treatment. Cleanup with denatured alcohol.

  • Dewaxed Shelac

This is exactly what I wanted but could not find it anywhere in town. A shellac that is dewaxed is a must in my finishing process and allows me to control the build of the finish. This brand is the only one I know of on the market that is made in this way other than mixing flakes.

Great product for novice woodworkers like myself. Requires quite a bit of research and elbow grease to come out looking nice but it's the best product out there for the purpose of a pre-stain coat on sanded pine or cypress. It's also great to touch up an older stained furniture that just has a few trouble spots. I just wish the local HD would carry it again -- had to order online and had to order 4-qt containers (a gallon) which was the best price but still somewhat inconvenient since this product does have a shelf life.

I used this on some pine doors I was staining/glazing and could not be more pleased. I had testing it on some sample wood, along with another pre-conditioner and the Zinsser sealed fine as did the other pre-conditioner but the Zinsser allowed the grain patterns to show through much better. The doors stained perfectly, without any blotching.

1. Dewaxed Shellac is very easy to apply and dries in minutes if thinned a bit with denatured alcohol. After a couple of full strength coats you're ready to wax it. 2. Or, if you want to apply something else, like a plastic coating, you can. It's dewaxed and most anything will stick. 3. 4 Quarts is a great idea in that the cost is the same and it doesn't go bad like a half empty gallon can while sitting around for a long time. Photo is just this shellac on beech with 2 coats of furniture wax.
