The iRobot s9+ uses a camera and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to map the rooms in your house, recognize its exact location in each room and how to return to the Clean Base. The more you run the vacuum, the more precise the maps and the better the clean. I really like the way the s9 cleans, after it mapped my rooms and iRobot replaced the brush head assembly. I believe the s9 initially had a flawed brush head, so like many others on these review pages, I kept getting Error 2 "Clean the brushes" that shutdown the s9. The brushes were never dirty. The replacement brush head fixed the problem. iRobot does a very poor job of educating their customers on the most effective way to setup their s9. First, turn on every light in the rooms you are going to map, because the s9 camera needs to identify reference points in each room. The AI then stores those reference points for future cleaning runs to know where it is in your house. Second, always do mapping runs first (no vacuuming), until the s9 completes each Map. If you don't, it takes hours and multiple recharges to create the Map. Third, the s9 relies on its camera to navigate, so it cannot navigate in darkened rooms. This is a downside, since I wanted the s9 to vacuum at night while I slept, but I have to leave all the lights on. In darkened rooms, the s9 Maps are useless, so it wanders aimlessly until the battery dies. LiDAR-based robot vacuums use lasers and can map and navigate in the dark. Fourth, the s9 is noisy because of the 40x vacuum power that comes at a cost, but great for pet hair. However, the onboard dust bin is small and fills quickly with hair. The s9 is an amazing piece of technology. It is constantly learning to the point that it now stops at each railing baluster, turns the corner-sweeping brush in between the balusters to clean then moves to the next baluster and turns, then the next. Scary smart.
