Questions & Answers

Do the contents give off an odor? Is it rodent proof?

Asked by: katy
Odor and rodent problems are usually a function of what you put into the bin. Only kitchen waste that has no meat, bones, cheese, butter, and no animal wastes. Very wet compost will smell: add some dry leaves or grass clippings to dry it out. To dry? Add a little water. Rodents will not bother compost that is well mixed and has no animal products in it. It also helps to turn it, we keep a small pitchfork next to the bin. We also compost shredded paper plates and napkins although they take longer to breakdown.

I Is it rodent proof? Do the contents give off an odor?

Asked by: Katy
If composting is done, no there is no odor. Please research online the correct green vs brown ratio. I did put hardware cloth (wire mesh) under neath the barrel just in case because my backyard backs up to a field with many gophers. But again, if you compost correctly, it should not attract rodents or animals. Do not use animal by products and you should be fine. No Milk, meat, bones, etc..

I see that people are saying no animal products. I'm assuming that this includes no egg shells. Is this correct? I think this would be the only animal product I would include; but if it's going to attract rodents and reptiles, and fruits and vegetables won't, then I can skip these. The only other thing we have to worry about are bears, but I don't think there is much we can do about that.
Asked by: MGR
You can definitely compost egg shells. However, if you want to keep the smell "in" and not attract any animals (including bears) i suggest you use the Aerobin 400. It is by far the best composter and requires no work and does not smell. If you have more questions please call us: Exaco - 877-760-8500 ext 701.
