Is the fabric strong enough to hold down outdoors if grommets are installed at edges? How far from edges do they need to be?

Marginally, but yes. I installed over pergola, 30 feet long. Roll edge over 3 times, and install grommets. I put grommets about one inch from the edge. I used small bungees through the grommets to hold it down. Too much tension on a few grommets, and it did start to tear. I backed off and have had on for two summers. I take it off in the winter, or snow weight would be an issue. I also used this for window screens. Amazing reduction in heat, especially on deck that pergola covers, dropped temp about 10 degrees.

Liz, I used inch and a quarter deck screws with 1" flat washers (center hole 1/4" so the screw will not pull through) to hold down the shade cloth. I spaced them about 18" apart. I wanted to be able to easily replace the cloth when it wears out. I folded 1" under along the edges for extra strength. Take care when you stretch the material. You do not want to stretch it too tight. We have had 2 hurricanes with no damage.

Is this one continuous roll that is 12ft x 50ft? Some reviews have stated that they received two 6ft x 50ft rolls.

Mine was one continuous roll of 12' x 50'. They do sell one that is 6' x 100' as well.
