Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

How much does fence installation cost?
The cost for fencing installation varies depending on a number of factors, including fence type, material, length, terrain, local regulations and labor costs. During an in-home consultation, your local Home Depot service professional will help determine your needs, review style options and provide a project estimate.
What does the fence installation cost include?
As part of your fence installation, we provide start-to-finish project management. Our local service provider will pull any necessary permits, professionally install your fence, and clean up and dispose of any job-related debris. (Disposal fees may apply.) Before leaving your property, the installer will walk you through final inspection of the fence and answer any questions you may have.
Why can’t you quote a price over the phone or online?
The terrain around your home is a major factor in determining the cost of your fence installation. Slopes, undulating surfaces and flat ground all impact pricing. Before presenting an estimate, we’ll walk your property to understand its unique characteristics.
What types of fencing materials are available?
The Home Depot’s trusted local installers can build the fence you’ve always wanted. Whether you’re looking for strong wood fencing, low maintenance vinyl fencing, composite, metal, or aluminum, our service professionals will present custom design options based on your needs and budget.
What are some common reasons for building a fence?
The Home Depot's licensed, local installers can help you find many different uses for fencing around your home. For example, a privacy fence in composite, wood or vinyl is a great way to make your backyard feel like an extension of your home’s interior, while a security fence can protect against unwanted animals or trespassers. An ornamental metal or wood fence can add a decorative visual element and provide a layer of protection around an outdoor space, like a pool or garden. No matter what your needs, there are many fencing materials, styles and colors to choose from.
What should I expect during the installation?
During your in-home consultation, our installer will determine your fencing needs, measure your yard, present custom design options and give a project estimate. Then we’ll order your materials, set an install date, arrange delivery of your fencing materials and get started. After installation, your fencing contractor will remove any debris, conduct a final inspection, and review product and service warranties with you.
Do I need to be present during the installation?
You must be present at the start of the installation process to review the project plans with the local fence installer. Also, it’s important to be present at the completion of the project so that you may conduct a final inspection, complete the quality review checklist and go over the maintenance requirements of your newly installed fence with your installer.

It took months to do the job...there are still pieces missing - caps on the posts. The gate was put together with Knotwood fencing, but not as expected...they were unfamiliar with the product and just made up their own design...now there are screws sticking out of the gate and the corners are not square....made way too many mistakes - lots of holes in the vinyl that are not aesthetically appealing...did not clean up after themselves...left lots of fence pieces, metal, chain link pieces in the yard. Would appreciate someone from Home Depot who is familiar with Knotwood Fencing to reevaluate theirbwork especially the gate...I ended up doing a lot of the cleanup myself as well as having to have the owner come out and evaluate some of the work that they then had to do over...He was on site for the Knotwood Fence and gate...I expected him to use the product as intended, not just cut it and jerry rig it together to make a gate....disappointed in some of the workmanship!

New Fences

Having a new fence installed can greatly influence your home’s curb appeal and improve the feel of your outdoor space. Whether it’s installed in the front yard, backyard, or both, a new fence is a great outdoor remodel idea for your home. You may want to get a new fence installed if:

  • You’re looking to increase privacy in your backyard
  • Your front yard’s curb appeal could use a facelift
  • An old fence is worn, outdated, or the material no longer serves it’s intended purpose

Regardless of why you’re looking for a new fence, getting it installed with The Home Depot is a good investment.

Fencing Costs

Before hiring a fence installer, we recommended you hire a surveyor first to have documentation of where your land begins and ends. You can ask your local Home Depot for a recommended survey company in your area. When choosing a fence, the fence materials and yard size also influence cost. Low-maintenance materials will cost more upfront, but save you money in the future. A larger yard will take longer to install and require more materials, creating a larger installation project.
