We've outlined some average prices for HVAC maintenance, as well as standard repair prices, in our HVAC Service Cost Guide.
What is included in an AC, Heat Pump or Gas Furnace Tune-Up:
Your technician will perform all applicable tasks and explain any needed or recommended repairs, additional maintenance items or system enhancements such as indoor air quality systems, smart thermostats, or safety items. Customers must approve any additional work prior to having it completed.
Customers are encouraged to share any concern about their HVAC system and to observe and ask questions during the tune-up service. All Tune-Ups include a 6-month No Breakdown Guarantee provided all repair recommendations were accepted and completed.
Basic Cooling or Heating Maintenance Includes:
AC with Cooling or Heat Pump Tune-Up:
Gas or Electric Furnace Tune-Up:
No. Extended warranties and service agreements do not cover the cost of regular heating and air conditioning maintenance. HVAC tune ups are considered regular maintenance and are required by most manufacturers for your warranty to remain in effect.
An A/C tune-up usually takes 1–2 hours, but can take longer depending on any issues discovered during maintenance, the size of the unit, and the size of your home.
We offer maintenance and HVAC tune ups for all brands of central heating and air conditioning equipment. Systems serviced include central air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, and air quality systems such as whole-home humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and air cleaners. Tune up service is also available for oil furnaces, ductless mini splits and boilers in many markets.
Yes. Our local professionals can handle all of your heating and cooling maintenance and tune up needs including service for your furnace, air conditioner, mini split, heat pump, air handler or boiler.
All the air in your home circulates and recirculates through the same filter attached to your indoor unit. Air filters are designed to remove dust particles to keep the air you breathe clean. But as filters become clogged, your air conditioning and heating system work less efficiently and cost you more to operate. If left unchanged long enough, your system could fail completely.
Changing your central air conditioning unit's air filter at least once every six months will not only help you save on your monthly bills but also will help extend the life of your system. Changing the filter every three months is even better. Sign up for conveniently scheduled deliveries with The Home Depot's subscription service so that you always replace your air filter on time.
You should have a regular HVAC tune up (one AC tune up, one furnace tune up) twice a year, typically at the beginning of each heating and cooling season, to ensure that your system is working efficiently before the weather gets too hot or too cold. However, maintenance may be scheduled at any time.
If you notice strange sounds or smells coming from your AC system, your energy bills have increased, or your home isn't as cool as it should be, it may be a good time to have your AC serviced. However, keep in mind that more serious issues may require an AC repair instead of an AC tune-up.
You can perform some basic maintenance on your own, but we recommend contacting a pro for the rest of your A/C's tune-up needs.
The most important thing you can do by yourself is to replace or clean your air filter. A dirty air filter can restrict airflow, unnecessarily increasing the strain on your system. Also, you can clear dust and debris from and around the condenser (the outdoor unit).
Each spring and fall before you start using your air conditioner, furnace, or other heating and cooling systems, you should get an HVAC tune up to ensure your HVAC system is ready for the season. By spending a little twice a year for a spring AC tune up and fall furnace tune up, you can save a lot in energy bills by keeping your system operating at peak efficiency. You also can avoid costly repairs by identifying and fixing minor problems before they turn into big ones. Plus, many homeowners don't realize that their manufacturer's warranties may be considered invalid if they aren't getting their unit serviced twice a year with a furnace tune up or AC tune up.
