Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

How do I know if I need a roof replacement?
Your roof may be compromised if you see leaks, drips, peeling paint, or water spots inside your home. Other signs include discoloration or visible wear and tear on shingles. If you see any of these issues, it may be time to think about a roof replacement. A free in-home consultation with one of our licensed and insured roofers can determine if it’s time for a new roof.
What happens during my roofing consultation?
During your free in-home consultation, one of our authorized local service professionals will evaluate your roof and show actual samples of shingles. They will also explain what to expect during your roof installation project, and provide an estimate based on your needs and budget.
What should I expect as part of my roofing installation project?
During your initial in-home consultation, your roofing service professional will conduct a pre-installation inspection, ask you questions about your needs and budget, share product samples, and provide a customized estimate. When you’re ready to move forward, we will set up a convenient time for your installation, order your high-quality roofing materials and arrange their delivery to your home. On the day of the installation, the service professional will remove your old roof shingles and replace your roof complying to industry-leading standards. Once the installation is finished, they will conduct a final inspection, clean up the work area, remove any debris, and review warranty information with you.
What roofing materials are available?
Depending on your needs, there are a variety of roofing materials in different styles and color options. Asphalt shingles are commonly used as they are cost effective, highly durable and are the easiest to install. Shingle styles can range from architectural to three tab, and come in shades of black, brown, green or gray. The Home Depot’s roofing specialists can also install beautiful roofing tiles or shingles for low-slope and flat roofs.
What type of roofing shingles work best?
There are many factors to consider when selecting a new roof, including style, color, durability, warranties and cost. For asphalt roofs, traditional, three-tab flat shingles offer both value and performance and their color is blended for a natural look. Architectural shingles create a multidimensional effect and feature laminated construction to lengthen shingle life. During your in-home consultation, your service professional can help you select the best option for your home and budget.
Do you offer warranties on roofing?
Yes. The Home Depot’s roofing and installation services are protected by craftsmanship warranties that last up to 25 years. Shingle and product warranties may last up to 50 years. After your installation is completed, your service professional will review the warranties and answer any questions you may have.
What brands of roofing materials does The Home Depot install?
The Home Depot installs many leading brands of roofing materials, including Timberline, Owens Corning and Royal Sovereign. Product availability varies from location to location. Ask your service professional or local Home Depot associate for more information.

I was told by the salesperson that the project would take two days at the most. It wound up taking four days. On the third day there were only two workers and on the last day there was only one. Also, the initial estimate did not include work required around 4 skylights. And the amount of plywood sheathing necessary to complete the project added almost $4,000 more to the final cost.

The roof looks great and we are very pleased with the work. The installers were here early and worked all day until darkness caused them to have to leave and come back the next day. The next day they came early, finished the roof and cleaned up all the debris. Very efficient and were friendly and responded to any questions or concerns we had during the installation. Customer Service was excellent from start to finish.

Roof Replacement and Installation

Your roof is one of the most essential components of your home. But it is continuously exposed to the elements, leaving it vulnerable to damage and disrepair. Even if your roof is relatively new, performing regular maintenance, like cleaning gutters and valleys, can extend its lifespan. Conversely, ignoring or putting off maintenance or small repairs can lead to more challenging, costly projects down the line.

To keep your roof looking its best, conduct regular roof inspections to identify issues before they become more significant concerns. Damage like surface bubbles, buckling, curling, cracked or missing shingles, or gutters filled with shingle granules are sure signs your old roof needs the attention of a professional roof contractor.

Cost and Estimates

For professional help with your roof installation, start by scheduling a free in-home consultation which will include a customized estimate. During the appointment, you will meet with one of our expert roof installers to discuss your specific roof replacement needs, choose the right shingles to match the style of your home, and learn how to complete your project at a cost that fits your budget.

Selecting Roof Shingles

There are several factors you should consider when choosing a new roof, including style, durability, installation requirements, color and warranties. Here are some things to keep in mind when speaking to a roofing contractor:

  • While asphalt shingles are most common, other roofing materials include metal or tile for steep slopes or single-ply membranes for flat roofs.
  • Shingles come in a variety of colors from natural wood shades to intense blues, greens and reds. Before selecting a color palette, you may want to check your homeowners’ association guidelines to ensure your selections meet their defined standards.
  • Traditional, three-tab asphalt shingles offer better performance than standard roof shingles. Architectural shingles provide the highest quality option among asphalt shingles and feature laminated construction that adds durability and creates a multidimensional effect.
  • Special adhesives tightly seal roof shingles to one another to reduce the risk of blowing off, which would require you to pay for costly roof repairs.
  • Shingle warranties can range from 25 years to a lifetime warranty.

Signs Your Roof Is Failing

Roofs with cracked, curled or blistering shingles are prone to leaks, which allow water to get into your attic. When this happens, the best investment you can make is usually a full replacement of the failing roof. Roof replacements should include removal of old shingles, a structural integrity inspection, a rubberized leak barrier where needed, roof deck underlayment, drip edge, new flashings and more.
