Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common Carpet Installation questions.

How do I know if I need to have new carpet installed?

If your carpet starts to unravel at the seams, is shedding or has experienced water damage, it’s time to replace your carpet. Carpet that has begun to unravel and come loose is both potentially a safety hazard and an eyesore. Shedding or sprouting of fibers is normal after a new installation, but if you’ve had it for 5-10 years, it may also be a sign that it’s time to consider new carpet. Water damaged carpet can permanently stain, grow mold and mildew and leave an unpleasant odor. Our professional carpet installers will remove your old carpet and install your newly selected carpet.

Which carpet fiber is right for my room?

The Home Depot has five fiber options – Triexta, nylon, polyester, olefin and wool. Each type offers benefits and it’s best to choose which one is right for you based on the amount of traffic your room gets. Triexta is easy to clean, nylon is less likely to mat down and polyester has superior stain resistance. Olefin is both durable and inexpensive, while wool is a natural fiber that is also durable. We offer free in-store design services to help you make the right choice of carpet for your home.

Is there a carpet that’s spill-proof or pet-friendly?

The Home Depot offers an exclusive line of Lifeproof carpet. Lifeproof is durable and stain-resistant for all of life’s little messes. We also have Lifeproof Petproof, which is ideal for pet owners and resistant to any pet stain. Both are backed by our 25-year texture retention warranty and lifetime warranty for food, beverage and soil stains.

What’s the difference between solution-dyed and surface-dyed carpet?

Color is consistent throughout the fibers of solution-dyed carpet. This means the color will not fade over time, it resists stains, is easy to clean and ideal for high-traffic areas. Surface-dyed carpet has color on the outside portion of the fibers. Because of this, there are more color options available, the color quality is high and colors are more uniform.

Why do I need to use a carpet pad with my carpet?

The type of carpet pad you select can have a major impact on the comfort and lifespan of your carpet. A better pad will result in a more comfortable, durable carpet in your home. Padding also helps decrease wear and tear, while protecting the carpet from the subfloor. We offer four different carpet pads for you to choose from that range in level of comfort and durability.

How do I keep my new carpet clean after it’s been replaced?

To maintain the appearance of your new carpet, we recommend you vacuum it at least twice a week using a vacuum that’s been certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute. Clean spills promptly by blotting the area with a cloth and warm water—avoid rubbing the spill. We also suggest having your carpet professionally cleaned every 12-18 months.
