Electric Vehicle Charging Solutions
The Home Depot's electrical installation professionals will consult with you to find the best charging station for your electric vehicle and budget.
How do I prepare my home for an electric car charger?
A licensed Home Depot electrical professional will help you prepare for your installation. During the in-home consultation the licensed professional will discuss a new electrical circuit to support your vehicle and what to expect before and during your installation.
Where should I install the charging station?
The charging hardware should be installed as close to the vehicle charging port as possible.
Can any electrician install my charging equipment?
Yes, however there are some unique recommendations. The circuit for charging a vehicle is significantly larger than almost any circuit in a residential home, so care should be taken to make sure it is installed correctly. The Home Depot will provide a licensed and insured electrical professional to consult with you on the installation of a new electrical circuit to support your vehicle.
How much does it cost to install an in-home ev charger?
Each installation is custom to the home, so a licensed electrical contractor will need to look at the scope of the work in order to provide an estimate. Distance is an important variable, so an installation that is 10 feet away from your electrical panel will be less expensive than a 100 foot run. Other variables such as drywall patching, complicated or difficult circumstances may affect the installation costs. Installations can run from several hundred to several thousand dollars.
Do I need a permit?
Most likely. Almost every municipality building department requires a permit and inspection when adding a load to your existing electrical panel. The permit and inspection of your installation is an important safety check, ensuring a correct and code compliant installation. If in doubt, contact the permit department of your local building administration to ask for confirmation.
Electric Vehicle Charger Installation
In addition to a reduction in your carbon footprint and saving on charging costs, there are multiple benefits to installing a 240-volt EV car charger in your home. A 240-circuit can be installed with anywhere from a 15 to 100 amp circuit breaker, providing significantly faster recharge speeds compared to a 110-volt household outlet. Most EV owners install a 240-volt circuit with 30, 40, or 50 amp circuit breakers.
Your new electric vehicle and in-home EV charger will allow you to plug in each evening to wake up to a full battery every morning. Many EV owners top off their vehicle battery for a few hours each evening. You can relax knowing that your 240-volt EV car charger will fully charge your vehicle in just a few hours.
