Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common Solar Water & Pool Heaters questions.

When can I expect a return on my investment?

A solar water heating system pays for itself. Homeowners can expect return on investment for the cost of the solar system in less than 3 years.

How does a solar water heating system work?

All solar water heating-systems feature two components: a solar thermal collector and a storage tank (reservoir). The solar thermal collector absorbs solar energy in the form of heat and transfers this heat to a storage tank for later use, offsetting the need for electrical or gas heating elements. This can be done using the water in the storage tank itself or indirectly using a heat transfer fluid and heat exchanger. Beyond this the components and possibilities for system configurations are endless.

How does solar pool heating work?

Solar pool heating systems have three basic components: a panel, a pump and a filter. A pump, usually your existing pool pump, pushes water through a filter to strain leaves and debris. Water is then pumped into a solar pool heating panel mounted on your roof, porch, fence, or any other location with good sun exposure (optimally south facing in North America). The water is substantially heated as it moves through the panel and it flows back into your pool, warming the water. Unlike solar water heaters for indoor use, solar pool heaters do not require a storage tank. Your pool provides all the storage required. As an added benefit, homeowners in hot climates can use solar pool systems to cool their pool in the summer months by circulating water at night, when air temperatures are lower.

How do I know what size storage tank is best for my home?

The size of the tank is determined by the amount of people in the home. The typical hot water consumption is 20 gallons per day per person for the first two people, 15 gallons per day for all additional people.

Can a solar-water heating system replace my electric or gas water heater?

Not entirely, but they can greatly reduce the need for conventional heating sources to be used. Depending on system size, hot water usage, climate, and other factors solar water heating systems can provide up to 80% of energy needed for water heating on an annual basis.

Solar Water & Pool Heaters

Having a solar water and pool heater installed at your home can provide energy savings and help reduce your utility bill. This type of system is known as Solar DHW (Domestic Hot Water). Our local installers will help you get the most bang for your buck by optimizing your space with the right number of panels based on the size of your roof and the amount of sunlight it gets each day.

Solar water heating systems are efficient and reduce the use of fossil fuels. The system involves a tank and collectors. Put simply, water is pumped from the tank to the solar collector mounted on the roof of your home or building. As the sun hits the collector, the water, which enters from the bottom of the collector, is heated. It then returns to the collector for immediate or future use. Another benefit to going solar is a 30% Federal Tax Credit. There may be other rebates and incentives for your area as well.

Solar Collectors
Our collectors are designed to be used in any environment. Our solar experts will help you select the option that best fits your needs and your budget. Sometimes called Domestic Hot Water (DHW), collectors designed for solar water heating are made of glass, copper and insulation. They are designed to quickly heat to high temperatures suitable for bathing, laundry, and dishwashing. However, solar hot water heaters are also adaptable for a commercial size facility such as laundry, medical office, hotels or restaurants.

Solar Pool Heating
Pool heating technology requires that large amounts of water (thousands of gallons) be heated to more moderate, comfortable temperatures, which are typically lower than bathing requirements. Thus, this technology is designed to circulate high volumes of water slowly and repeatedly through polypropylene collectors. Solar pool heating technology is similar to the water that is warmed in your garden hose when it sits in the sun; it therefore requires far fewer enhancements than other forms of solar energy. Advantages of our solar pool heating systems include:

•  Extend your swim season in any climate
•  Warmer water for night swims and younger swimmers
•  No moving parts and is virtually maintenance free
•  Durable, proven construction, manufactured for over 35 years
•  12 year full warranty and limited lifetime warranty
