Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common Solar Water & Pool Heaters questions.

When can I expect a return on my investment?

A solar water heating system pays for itself. Homeowners can expect return on investment for the cost of the solar system in less than 3 years.

How does a solar water heating system work?

All solar water heating-systems feature two components: a solar thermal collector and a storage tank (reservoir). The solar thermal collector absorbs solar energy in the form of heat and transfers this heat to a storage tank for later use, offsetting the need for electrical or gas heating elements. This can be done using the water in the storage tank itself or indirectly using a heat transfer fluid and heat exchanger. Beyond this the components and possibilities for system configurations are endless.

How does solar pool heating work?

Solar pool heating systems have three basic components: a panel, a pump and a filter. A pump, usually your existing pool pump, pushes water through a filter to strain leaves and debris. Water is then pumped into a solar pool heating panel mounted on your roof, porch, fence, or any other location with good sun exposure (optimally south facing in North America). The water is substantially heated as it moves through the panel and it flows back into your pool, warming the water. Unlike solar water heaters for indoor use, solar pool heaters do not require a storage tank. Your pool provides all the storage required. As an added benefit, homeowners in hot climates can use solar pool systems to cool their pool in the summer months by circulating water at night, when air temperatures are lower.

How do I know what size storage tank is best for my home?

The size of the tank is determined by the amount of people in the home. The typical hot water consumption is 20 gallons per day per person for the first two people, 15 gallons per day for all additional people.

Can a solar-water heating system replace my electric or gas water heater?

Not entirely, but they can greatly reduce the need for conventional heating sources to be used. Depending on system size, hot water usage, climate, and other factors solar water heating systems can provide up to 80% of energy needed for water heating on an annual basis.
