Water Heater Service and Repair
The Home Depot repairs all major brands of water heaters and provides a warranty for workmanship of the repair for 90 days
How do I know if I need to repair my water heater rather than replace it?
It often comes down to the age and overall condition of the existing water heater. You should read through the symptoms listed below and consider a diagnostic examination. If the water heater is outside the warranty period or the repairs are extensive, we recommend that it be replaced rather than repaired.
Is there a fee for an in-home visit?
Yes, a flat diagnostic fee will be charged when the installer comes out and assesses the situation. The diagnostic fee will be credited toward the final cost of the repair.
What does an in-home visit include?
After scheduling an appointment, which includes an in-home diagnostic fee, our professional installer will examine your water heater. The installer will review the findings and recommend any needed repairs and provide a quote for the final cost of repairs. At that point, you'll have the choice to proceed with the repairs, decline the repairs, or replace your water heater completely.
Can the repair be completed the same day as the diagnostic?
Repair or replacement work can be executed the same day as a diagnostic in-home visit if you call before noon and the installer has the parts on hand. The diagnosis and repair should not take more than 1 to 2 hours.
Is the repair work guaranteed?
Yes. The Home Depot warrants the workmanship of the repair, maintenance, and installation for 90 days from the completion date. During the warranty period, a contractor will repair the hot water heater at no charge to you, including any defects, due to faulty workmanship. The Home Depot’s warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, neglect, or improper care or cleaning. Merchandise and materials are covered exclusively by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Water Heater Problems
There are a variety of water heater problems that can occur and require professional repair. Determining the problem’s severity will drive the recommendation of repair and service versus install and replace. Common symptoms of failing hot water heaters include:
• Water that won’t get as hot as it used to, which can be caused by gas valve problems, burner assembly issues, and more.
• An extremely limited duration of hot water.
• The pilot light no longer working.
• The smell of gas when near the water heater.
• Rust or sediment in your water, generally a sign of a corroding tank that needs flushing.
• Plastic pieces in your water could be a sign of the dip tube degrading.
• A tank that leaks from the top or the side may have a problem with the pressure and temperature valve, flex line connections, or pipes to and from the water heater.
• Banging in the pipes often occurs because of increased pressure. This can usually be fixed with the installation of a pressure reducing valve.
• A noisy water heater may also be related the burner assembly and upper or lower heating elements.
Emergency Repair Services
After scheduling an appointment, our repair professional will examine the condition of your water heater. The service provider will review the findings and recommend any needed repairs, along with a final cost. At that point, you’ll have a choice:
• Accept the repair work; the diagnostic fee will be rolled into the final price.
• Decline the repair work; a diagnostic fee will be charged for the inspection.
• Upgrade to a new water heater; the diagnostic fee will be applied to the installation cost.
If you’re planning to proceed with either repairs or an upgrade, you can help the process by:
• Being available at the site during the scheduled time.
• Removing obstructions so the service providers can easily inspect equipment.
• Providing access to other parts of the home (attic, basement, etc.), if necessary.
Be aware that you may be temporarily without the use of water during the repair.
