How do I treat weeds?

Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
Is my yard dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a nap during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. Here's how you can check to see if it's dormant: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new sod or grass seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.
Should I grow strawberries vertically?
As the veggies and plants grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at peak freshness. If these same plants grow along the ground, you may miss your harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when they're huge at the end of summer.
How do I keep my garden healthy?

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often discover it when you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can or garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.
Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. In other words, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.
Watch Your Garden Thrive

Many flowers wilt and droop when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions right below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten your plant to a pole or trellis with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, canteloupe and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.

Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Think about how deep the taproots go, how far the root ball extends outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
