As we stretch into summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, irrigation, and shade. Just like we can get sunburned, perennials can dry out, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, and grass can get scorched. Let us help. Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're concerned that your lawn has brown blades of grass, don't panic just yet. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the summertime heat. If that's the case, it won't be a patchy brown, but brown everywhere. Gently tug out a blade of grass to check the roots: If it comes right out, the grass is likely dead and you'll need to replace it. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting beneath the surface. Water dormant grass deeply once or twice per week, but avoid fertilizer.

For warm-season grass that stays green in the summer, water a bit every few days and deeply once a week. The amount of water should add up to about an inch, more or less, each week. Be careful not to overwater, and allow the lawn to dry out after heavy rains before you get out the garden hose or sprinkler again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's ok to let the grass grow taller this time of the year, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sunlight and water, as outlined in these garden watering tips. You'll need both to keep greenery growing growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler system, or garden hose will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So just keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of perlite, rock chips, or sand.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, They can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.

A backyard woodland may be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider the full-grown size of the trees, how far the roots extend outward and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from underground plumbing, as their strong roots will seek water and wend into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if disease or a significant storm weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the ideal places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
