Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How can I get rid of weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator mask and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a quenching drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

Why should I use vertical gardening at home?

As the veggies and plants grow, keeping your harvest healthy is easier. You can see any pests or evidence of wildlife eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them immediately, so you can enjoy them at peak freshness. If these same plants grow along the ground, it's easy to miss your first harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

When do I fertilize my garden?

After you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Do patio misters cool the air?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I do a quick backyard makeover?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need a full patio makeover or to create your patio collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even outdoor string lights can breathe new life into an outdoor space.

As the calendar turns to summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the season. You'll need to consider how to keep things cool with shade and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, annuals and grass can dry out, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got guidance to help your garden, your lawn, and your family make it through the hotter months.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discolored spot that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll usually find it when you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if buildings or trees shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will work well. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers droop when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine when they dry off. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, monitor the nutrients your plants are getting. Use fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the proper nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors, and are generally low-maintenance. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb an arbor or trellis to provide both beauty and shade. Vines that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Morning glories, honeysuckle, and clematis are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
