How do I treat weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Is my grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy brown. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or grass seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.
When should I water my shrubbery?
Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is setting. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, bushes, veggies, and plants. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your grass type, lawn's health, and climate, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.
How do I keep my veggie plants healthy?
After you've planted your flowers or plants, make sure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for the plants you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, veggie fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has brown and crispy blades of grass, don't worry just yet. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that's going to go dormant and turn brown in the blazing summer sun. If that's the case, it'll be brown overall instead of in patches. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new sod or grass seed. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's resting but still alive beneath the surface. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week — if it doesn't rain — but don't fertilize it.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Avoid overwatering, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the sprinkler or garden hose again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's ok to let the grass grow taller this time of the year, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it alive between rainstorms. A general rule when watering plants is to aim the water at the roots. A sprinkler system, garden hose, or drip irrigation system will work well. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt and droop when wet, but they'll recover just fine when they dry. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb the structure and give you both shade and beauty. Go with native vines to attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sun you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
