Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a good drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

When's the best time to water my garden?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. A noon or mid-day watering will evaporate quickly, so come back with an evening watering if possible. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, bushes, vegetables, and plants. Give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your lawn's health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to look into applying a liquid lawn fertilizer.

What are some tips to keep my plants healthy?

Once you've planted your flowers or plants, you'll need to make sure they're hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a shrub fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as suggested on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Can I make shady places to stay cool in the summer?

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Add awnings and shade sails to the house or shed to create shady spots. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I entertain on the patio?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a garden party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to prep your grill for summer for a delicious outcome. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat all day. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting. For best results, learn how to rid your yard of pesky mosquitos, too.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the season. That means you'll want to consider how to keep things cool with shade, proper tending, and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Tool Garden Center in Memphis In-Town, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Keep It Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it can look manicured and fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around hardscaping and trees.

Trees and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them to better show off their verdant beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw to shape bushes and small trees.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it alive between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will work well. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt and droop when but recover when they dry off. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Use fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the correct nutrients.

Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions right below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a tomato cage or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberries, canteloupe, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit more plants or have walking room in between.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees as accents, a few more to bear fruit, or a whole mini-forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, read up on how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

A backyard woodland can be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Think about how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Trees will always find the most accessible source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if a severe storm or disease weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the best places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
