A: I'd go with a 3/16" Tapcon myself but it would be better to consult the manufacturer's data online to be certain.
A: Adrian -- please Install with 0.148 in. x 3 in. nails, 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails or 10 x 1-1/2 in. or 2-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws -- they are usually kept close to the hangers --
A: Simpson Strong-Tie hurricane ties are designed to resist high winds and seismic forces by positively connecting trusses/rafters to the top of wall of the structure. These ties connect both solid-sawn and engineered lumber across a wide range of applications. Some hurricane tie models are available with additional corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications. Great for connecting 2x deck joists on top of a perpendicular beam Install in pairs on either side of the rafter/truss/joist to provide resistance to uplift and lateral forces Use also for a variety of connections where 1 member crosses another Made from 18-Gauge steel ZMAX galvanization offers extra corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications Install with 8d common nails or #9 x 1-1/2 in. strong-drive SD screws

A: I used these Simpson Strong Tie Model # H2.5AZ brackets to connect rafters to the plate. The directions say to Install with 8d common nails or #9 x 1-1/2 in. strong-drive SD screws. I used Simpson Strong Tie Model # SD9112R100 #9 x 1 1/2” hex head screws, also Model # N8DHDG-R Strong Drive 8d x 1 1/2” SCN Smooth Shank Connector Nail. The box of nails has 0.131” for a diameter written on them. Looking at my decimal / fraction chart 0.131 lands between 1/8” and 9/64”. So there is your hole size. Punching in search “Tapcon 1/8 or 9/16 screw” the smallest result is 3/16”. A little too big. You may find it easier to anchor a ledger or plate over concrete to fasten brackets to and lessen drilling. Simpson Strong Tie support is also a great resource for all their highly engineered products.
A: As per my city inspector only one side and it can be either the inside or outside.
A: No, Just one side and depending on what type of structure typically use on the inside of the structure.
A: There should be two ties on diagonal sides of the rafter.
A: Most contractors will only use them on one side - but I however put them on both. Cant tell you a good reason but for the low cost - more is better
A: I used these on both side of the carrying beam of my deck, but only on inside of the end floor joist. I used H1 Hurricane Ties on the rest of the joist on both side of the carrying beam. Here is images to my deck project last year.. https://photos.app.goo.gl/42ihZK8U7ZlXovtb2
A: Not that I know.
A: Marcus -- the Tie is designed to work on the left and right side -- rotate the Tie for best fit
A: No, there is no difference between the top side and bottom side.
A: Not really... just depends on which side of the joined members is easier to nail the connector (tie) to.

A: The same Tie is used for Right and Left sides -- all in placement
A: Can be used either way by flipping it over!
A: HD the design of the Z MAX eliminates the need for a left and right one -- just rotate for best fit
A: HD -- the Tie is used for left and right -- rotate the
A: The H2.5A is only available in the one profile shown as it is symmetrical and can be used on either side of the rafter. On one side it would install as shown in the installation illustration, then it can be inverted and used on the other side of the rafter as well (the upper portion attaching to the rafter would be over the plates). Thank you!
A: Sunny NC yes you can paint, but as you indicated the paint will not stay on the galvanized coating for long periods of time
A: It would be fine...
A: you can paint the Tie without an issued -- will not cause an issue with the galvanized coating
A: Sunny NC you can paint them with a water base
A: While we do not have any restrictions against painting our products, we do not have any information/guidelines to provide regarding painting galvanized steel as this is not our area of expertise. You may wish to check further with a paint manufacturer or the American Galvanizers Association for information on painting galvanized steel. Thank you!
A: Not recommended -- Use the Joist Hanger works best -- Home Depot hast the joist hanger and hurricane tie at the same display location
A: The H ties are rated for uplift and lateral loads, not download, therefore would not be recommended for this application. Please see the LSC adjustable stringer connector. Thank you!
A: Bulbtr -- at your Local HD you will find a large selection of Z-MAX products and one for step stringers
A: You could use them to help support for a extra weight with normal mounting through the seal as well I would use screws only my self, good luck ..
A: We can only support the installation with the tested/specified fasteners. Thank you!

A: We can provide allowable loads, dimensions, required fastener and other product related information for our connectors, but it is up to the Designer to specify the appropriate connector for the application based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. Thank you!
A: Mike the H2.5AZ will work fine with the cedar pergola
A: Mike these will work find with your cedar
A: The H2.5AZ is rated with either 8d common nails or the SD9112 structural connector screw. Typically the SD9112 will provide a higher capacity (all load directions except the F2 direction when attached to Spruce-Pine-Fir or Hem Fir). Thank you!
A: JayTee use the galvanized nails
