4.5 Love it, but....
I am very impressed with the power and self-propelled assistance. The only concern I have is the raisied root ball of my oak tree pushed the edge of the blades up into the plastic blade cover. The blade cut a hole right through the cover. Maybe a metal shield installed underneath to protect it from the edge of the blade? I want to give it 5 stars, but I can't as I have trees I need to maneuver around. This mower is difficult to turn, even with the assistance. It performs best on flat lawns.

    Batteries stuck in mower
After using this mower twice, the batteries became stuck in the mower on my third mow. I mean incredibly stuck. I pryed one out with a screw driver and the other is still in the mower. I cant even pry it out. Im damaging the mower and the battery by trying to get it out. I contacted Ryobi about the problem do i will update this review if possible, however, for a $600 mower i am pretty upset. The plus side of the priduct is that it cuts grass very well and i can get the blade razor sharp. Too bad i cant use it now.

Very good mower but not perfect
What I like: assembles quickly, pushed easy, plastic bag friendly basket, one lever height adjust with great range, mowed quarter acre yard with 2/3 battery, the front wheels are close to the deck, easy upright storing, powerful motor. What I don't like: inside deck already scratched, no key storing position, 1.5" uncut distance on side, height lever gets in the way, many cavities, button should start and stop blade, handle close to walls, wheel drive starts delay, front tires should be narrower

          Could be great...
During use, the mower has a ton of power… it definitely has more power, mulching in tall grass, than my old gas powered mower. I can mow my entire yard (0.3 acre lot) on a single battery if I dont use the self- propelled feature. Its quiet, it cuts very well and easy enough for my wife to use. The biggest issue I have with the mower is that the batteries fuse to the mower casing every time I use it. After bringing the mower home and giving it a try in the front yard, I spent at least 3 hours attempting to remove the batteries from the mower and researching the problem online so that I could charge them. I eventually used a thin piece of metal to break the fuse point in the plastic. Unfortunately, every subsequent mowing Ive experienced the same behavior… there seems to either be an overheating issue with the battery or the casing is just too close to the battery. Either way, save your self the frustration and look for another model.

Having Solar a battery mower is a must.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So far it seems strong, well build and functions very well. It can finish out just about half acre on one charge. It folds up for convenience and had 2 x 40v 6ah lithium batteries and lots of convenient featured. Lifetime warranty on deck, 5 years mower, 3 year batteried.

              I'm very happy with it!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've owned the 20" and the 21", trust me, the 21" has a ton more power, so it's well worth the upgrade. I'm on 1/2 acre and can mow on the two 6 amp battery's recharging once, not too shabby. It cuts well and no more cleaning out carbs or dealing with gas. The headlights seem gimmicky, but they work. It's actually quite enough to mow at night and the lights are great for that. I'm on an odd schedule so that's a big plus for me. The 21" is a bit heavier than the 20", but it's still much lighter than a gas model. Both models fold compactly in the shed, easy as pie. As with the other Ryobi tools, if there's a better model and you plan to use it a lot then spend a bit more and get the upgraded version. I've been very happy with both the regular line as intro tools and the HP line of tools for things I use often. It's a very good setup. The mower is something you'll use often, so it makes sense to go with at least mid-tier to get results. Saying that, for small yards, the 20" version is great. For larger properties you'll want to do it right and get something a bit more substantial.

Start key assembly is impossible to find
My machine is less than a year old and the start key assembly is no longer fitting into the slot. I’ve been searching online to replace it the part but it’s impossible to find even with the part number from the manual. This machine is still being sold so I’m unsure why this is an issue. Is this a known part to have issues? I’m unsure how to file a warranty claim.

Light duty, but performs within expectations!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this last week with high hopes. I have a relatively small yard and limited storage space so I decided to go electric for vertical storage. I specifically purchased this one because it’s assembled in the USA. It’s packaged well and easy to unbox and set up. Initial charge of batteries took about 1 hour each. Upon starting the first time, I noticed a knocking sound that went away almost immediately when it got up to speed. There was no audible noise other than the blade whirling. I looked underneath and noticed a small gouge in the deck on one side where the blade was hitting. It didn’t seem to impact the performance of the mower, so I mowed my yard, front and back with 1 battery in about an hour. There is a small amount of flex in the deck that allows the blade to hit the deck occasionally, but that will probably vary with how level the terrain is. I guess this is to be expected from a plastic deck, I just hope that it holds up. After mowing, the deck had gouges in both sides, but other than hearing it occasionally, it didn’t seem to affect the performance. It does have a lifetime deck warranty. Self-propelling function is great with great traction and pulling. Cut quality was pretty good, but time will tell as the grass thickens. Bagging function works well, but the bag fills up pretty quickly as I emptied about 7-8 times. Other than the blade hitting the deck, which improved as the blade cut a path, I’m pretty pleased with the performance. This is not a steel deck gas mower, so you must have realistic expectations using this equipment. Additional consideration for me is that I already have Expand-It compatible attachments and am going to replace my gas burning motor with the Brushless string timer handle tool to use with the 40V system. This will allow me to use what I have while converting to electric. I would recommend this tool for the right situations; yard size, storage limits, desire to go electric, and desire to use one battery across multiple tools to name a few.

                      Great Mower
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this a month ago mainly because my older gas mower was getting harder to start and I was tired of pushing it. I was very skeptical about buying a battery operated mower because I could literally see myself getting irritated with my new mower battery dying in the middle of the yard or something… I was so wrong and I am so happy to have this mower. Plenty of battery life and power to easily cut my 10,000 sq ft property. Extremely easy to operate and powerful.

it does ok for dry thin lawns but not any good for thick lawns. spend your money on a good quality gas powered mower. see pics.

                            Don’t Buy this mower!
We bought this mower in hopes of making an environmental difference. The battery power did not last long enough to cut our front yard. What used to take 10 minutes now took hours. The cuts were uneven. The self propel system was slow. It would stall out in the slightest taller grasses. Removing the batteries was also difficult. Will be returning today and going back to gas powered mowing. Also, the weed whacker that came with it was very heavy due to the batteries weight.

                              Manufacturer defects
Having just purchased this mower today, I unpacked it as soon as I got home. Upon one pass on my lawn, the rear wheel starting making a skipping noise. I removed the left wheel and found a screw had somehow lodged itself in the gears. That was an easy fix. However, one of the batteries will not charge. Therefore, I'll be taking that battery back for an exchange. Poor quality control. I just hope it doesn't fall apart on me.

Deck cuts and battery melting issues
After only having this mower for a couple of days and cutting my yard once I am suffering from the deck housing cuts common with this mower, and batteries or mower or both getting so hot that the batteries melt / fuse to the inner housing making it difficult to get them out even after letting the mower sit and cool down for several hours.

Plastic deck needs to be more stiff
Using the mower for the first time, there were multiple times the blade cut/scrapped the inside of the mower deck. This happened at slight bumps and on uneven ground. My lawn is fairly level but this happened often enough to be quite surprising. It was frustrating enough that this happened to a brand new lawn mower that cost so much. I also did a lot of research before buying this and believed that this issue was fixed. But I guess not.

1 year old and still running well
I have a little over 1/2 acre and so far this lawn mower has performed well. I have 2 rapid chargers and 4 batteries which I rotate. to finish the lawn I have to charge two extra batteries. the mower keeps spped up until the cut off time when the voltage drops below operating level. with dry grass the mower works great. if the lawn is slightly wet the mower blade speeds up and uses up the battery more quickly. I always wash the mower after each use with a hose and clean and wash the grass catcher bag. I replaced the LED front light assembly once soon after I bought the mower but for over a months now the LED light continuous to work well. I read some people have some problems with the mower but so far this machine has worked well for me. I bought a Ryobi leaf blower which uses the same battery.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This thing, let me tell yah, is amazing. Light weight, cuts beautifully, self propelled is very easy to use and works great, most effective bagger I’ve ever had, I love how it folds up for storage, and the battery last way longer then I need for my yard I will never use gas again.

New homeowner. Researched online and decided on going with an battery powered lawn mower. Based on the great reviews, I decided on this model Ryobi. Lawn mower worked great the first time. I was happy with my purchase as it was easy to store in garage and operate. Fast forward to this weekend. The machine no longer works. The blades do not engage and the self propel no longer work. I do not have my receipt and I am past my 30 day return window. I feel like I wasted 500 bucks.

This year I decided to purchase the Ryobi 40V HP Self-Propelled 21in single blade lawn mower. On the box the mower boost about 70 mins of runtime and cuts up to 3/4 acres. This sadly is not the case!!! My yard is 8000 sq ft that's .184 acres. Using both batteries, I get about 2/3 of my yard cut. Then have to wait hours for the batteries to cool and recharge before finishing the job. Very frustrating when other Ryobi tools work so well.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have wanted this mower for a while now. I have about 8,000 sf of St Augustine which takes about 45 minutes or so to mow with a gas mower. I was hesitant because I was not sure this mower could equal my current gas mower. I was truly amazed that that it not only cuts just as well, but it is actually faster and much, much quieter too! Love the locking handle and quick height adjustment. Makes mowing a breeze!

I got this mower based on youtube review. I have 1/3 acre or 16,000 Sq ft flat lawn, typically takes me 1hr 10 mins to mow with a toro self propel personal pace walk behind mower. No way does this mower capable to mow my lawn with the 2 40volt 6ah battery fully charged, I had to use 3 full charge battery, very disappointed…it takes approx 1 hr to charge 1 battery, I honestly one to give this mower a try, after using it twice, same results… it mow well on dry grass, if the grass is wet it sucks!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I looked forward to providing a positive review for my 40V Brushless 21 inch self propelled mower. With my gas powered mower it take me (a 65 years old) about 70 minutes. Thought this would be a good fit as you indicate batteries last 70 minutes. Unfortunately, at high speed, the mower is too slow. Batteries only last about 30 minutes. After using each battery (and recharging the first for an additional 30 minutes) it now takes over one and a half hours to cut my lawn. After the first use I discovered copious clippings captured between the multching plug and rear discharge door.

It's spring and I've been waiting for more than a week for a part for my riding mower, my grass got the highest its ever been in the 10 years of me living in my home. I've wanted to upgrade my 18v Ryobi mower for hitting the perimeter of our home/garage and the ditch line by the road. We only have a 1/2 acre so I bought this and our grass was nearly 6-10" throughout. I set the mower height to 2 and ran through batteries but it worked like a champ. Normal height grass and this would kill it.

                                                        Great electric mower!
Very pleased with first mow! Batteries charged up quickly, and mowed the front and back yard (generic subdivision yard) on half the first battery. Should be able to mow again on the other half. The grass catcher works fine, and the self-propelled feature pulls strongly. The only oddity was the self propelled engagement lags just a bit before it takes off moving forward. No biggie. Overall, glad to have the electric mower and glad to be done with gas and oil and the old style mower.
