What are good ways to get rid of weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or grass seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
When's the best time to water my shrubs?
If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, bushes, veggies, and grass. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. When do I fertilize my plants?

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discolored area that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often find it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or sprinkler. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by extreme wear or pet behavior, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of shade-happy grass.
Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees, and bushes. They may need less watering than vegetable plants or delicate flowers, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water bushes and trees — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from drying out.
Also, check for damaged areas on the shrubs and trees. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on tree bark. When your leaves look like lace, insects or caterpillars are eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your bushes or trees.
Vertical Vegetable Gardening
Grow produce vertically to save space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. The key to success is supporting the branches, stem, and fruit. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.
Fasten the plant to a pole or trellis with twine, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, watermelon and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Plant vines near an arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Viney plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
