Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How can I get rid of weeds?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix scorched grass?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a quenching drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within the next week. The method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

When should I water my plants?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. A noon or mid-day watering will evaporate quickly, so come back with an evening watering. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, veggies, bushes, and grass. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, lawn's health, and climate, you may also want to look into applying a liquid lawn fertilizer.

How do I fertilize my veggie garden?

Once you've planted your flowers or plants, make sure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a veggie fertilizer, flower fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as suggested on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Can I make shady places to stay cool in the summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and shade sails to the house or shed to create shadowy spots to rest under. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

What do you carry for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to prep your grill for summer for a delicious outcome. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free summer yard without pesky mosquitos.

As the calendar turns to summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the season. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, garden flowers can dry out, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, and grass can get scorched. We've got guidance to make it through the hotter months.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discolored spot that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often find it when you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler or garden hose. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by extreme wear or pet behavior, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Summertime garden upkeep comes down to balancing hydration and sun, as outlined in these garden watering tips. You'll need both to keep your spirits high and your garden growing with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A sprinkler, garden hose, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers wilt when but recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Use fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the proper nutrients.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
For summer gardening, grow vegetables vertically to conserve space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten your plant to a pole or tomato cage with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberry, watermelon, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or arched arbor so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Go with vines that are native to your area to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Morning glories, honeysuckle, and clematis are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunshine you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
