Q:Our Client wants "Belldon" CAT6 cable. Is this a manufacture name or a grade that you match?

Answer This Question

A:  The company name is Belden and they manufacture Cat 6 cables among a pretty wide range of other cable types

A:  Not even close. This is likely the worse of the cat cable brands. We have used it in a pinch when something happened and we ran out of cable on the truck, but we can always tell the difference when we terminate the cable, and when we test it. Belden is one of the best brands you can buy hands down. Belden cable (for one thing) has what is called zero SKU cabling. Meaning the cable lengths are exactly equal on each pair of the wire all the way through. I know for a fact this cable is a high sku. That means you can sometimes see a footage difference on a brown pair verse a blue pair. This can be an issue for high end equipment, like HDMI over Cat 5e, or situations where you want to get the best speeds from the cable. I would suggest if they want a brand name cable, you should sell them a brand name cable.

A:  Belden is a manufacturer. This is a comparable product.

      by|Mar 6, 2021

A:  If they are specifying Belden, you must use Belden. It is unacceptable to substitute other vendors' products when a specific product is called out in specs unless the specs state "or equivalent" and even then Belden manufactures about twelve different types of CAT6 cable and you would need to verify compatibility.

A:  Beldon is a manufacture's name. It is possible that they carry a similar product to Southwire's 1000 ft. Blue 23G 4 Pair CAT6 Plenum CMP Cable.

A:  if they want Belden, you better sell them Belden - or at least verify they want an equivalent! Belden is TOP of the line.

A:  They do carry it in white. Red is a very bad choice. i know from experence that inspectors do not like to see red wires on anything but fire alarms. i do not suggest Red or Orange even though you can purchase it in some brands. you will have alot of explaining to do even though it is technically not wrong.

A:  No, this product is not rated for direct burial. Southwire does not make a direct burial CAT6 cable at this time.

A:  no it can not. The CMP should say CMX in order for it to be direct burrial rated. Even then in the CMX there are liquid filled models for fully submersible and "damp locations" models. make sure you get the correct cable for the correct application. THat would be a sure way to pass/Fail an Electircal inspection

A:  No; you must look for direct burial CAT6 cable (CMX) which has a waterproof jacket.

Q:difference between riser and plenum cable

                  Answer This Question

A:  Riser cable is used in most residential applications or multi-level apartment buildings. It can be run vertically behind walls and under floors as long as it is not placed in air handling or plenum spaces. Plenum cable is used in most commercial or residential applications where the cable is run in a plenum or air handling space. Plenum has a more fire retardant jacket with less smoke, etc. Always follow state and local codes and requirements when installing these products. I have attached a spec sheet for Category 6 cable for your review.

A:  Answer from electrical engineer: - Plenum cable does not have structural integrity to run vertically. Use throughout a floor, but not between floors. Must be supported. - Riser cable is typically thicker gauge, and/or have other strength elements added so it can hang vertically in a building. Has nothing to do with fire-code.

A:  Please ignore the answer from the electrical engineer above. I have been a Licensed Professional Engineer for 35 years and I can tell you it is all about the fire rating.

A:  Fire rating. Riser is required when not explosed to a Plenum air return. Plenum is required when it is run throught a suspended ceiling which is also used as an air return. Check your return air ducts to see if they have ducted returns, or if they open the ceiling above. Also check with your local inspectors. some just want Plenum regardless.

                      by|May 4, 2023

A:  Plenum cable is jacketed with a fire-retardant material, making the cable suitable for use in wall cavities which may carry air supplies. All materials intended for use on wire and cables to be used in plenum spaces must meet NFPA 262 as outlined in NFPA 90A. Riser cable is suited for use in non-plenum areas and therefore have less stringent rating standards. You can always substitute plenum cable for riser, but never vice-versa.

A:  plenum is certified NOT to give off toxic fumes in a fire. It is a legal requirement and should be respected.

A:  Are you comparing apples to oranges? This product is pure annealed copper whereas some wires are CCA (copper clad aluminum) which is very much cheaper (and not recommended).

A:  I have found online prices to vary and sometimes you are really not getting the correct product so be careful when you by online. If Home Depot has two different prices I would assume it is the shipping cost or you may think you are buying from HD when in fact it is a 3rd party seller.
