Sharp-pointed self-piercing screws go in faster, but self-drilling screws work better in thicker steel or with more than 2 layers of steel. When screws will be covered with sheathing or drywall, it's best to use a low-profile head screw such as a modified truss head or pan head. If not covered with sheathing, and the protrusion of the head doesn't matter, then most framers prefer hex-washer head screws, which are less likely to disengage from the tip of the screwgun.
