Where is the thermostat connection?

Where is the thermostat connection?
Asked by: Altan2011
Not to be a know it all but lets use the word aquastat because that is what a plumber would call it. Thermostats measure air or room temp and aquastats measure water temp. Coming up from the bottom of the unit into roughly the center of the tank is an immersion well. Inside that well is a sensor called a thermister that acts as the aquastat. So when the sensor measures the water temperature as being below the set point the switch closes. This closed switch now allows current to flow to the circulation pump that moves hot boiler water through the coil. When the potable water reaches set point the switch opens. Now the thermister connects to the switch that is located on top of the unit. If you open the PDF of the installation instructions found on the Home Depot web site you will see this illustrated.

We my family and I used the original one that I installed in 1984 and were never out of hot water. After removing the original one I removed the heat exchanger to reduce the weight of the unit . There wasn't any lime deposit . Home Depot was the only source that I found in West Mich. After I ordered from Home Depot I found another source . It was $200 more. And more time .

The second was a replacement under warranty (the tank rusted out) and third was another replacment under warranty when the tank again rusted out. The second replacement was a total nightmare when the company demanded that I document the serial number of the original unit as well as the replacment. And of course there were several hundred dollars in charges for the work required to replace the units not covered by the warranty. The pros of the boiler mate is that it provides a pretty good hot water supply if you turn it up high enough so that you can mix cold water into it to fill a large bathtub. That magic number is about 160 degrees, which exceeds the perameters that the Boiler mate is designed to operate under. The cons are many. The first being is that your hot water supply is not separate from you heating system, so if you live in a climate where you ordinarily would be able to shut down your heating system for four or five months of warm weather, you cant. And if your boiler malfuctions, you also dont have any hot water. Second, This continual year round operation seems very hard on the boiler. In 19 years in this house I have had to not only replace the boiler mate twice, I have had to also replace the entire boiler once and have had it worked on for one issue or another related to almost continuous operation on average of every year and a half. It has been a very expensive lesson in the downsides of the Boiler mate. This week I have finally had enough. When the plumber gets out here Tuesday to repair thr boiler (again) we are going to decide on a new system independent from the boiler to replace it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Holds heat very well. Our boiler rarely turns on! Small profile makes it a great for low profile basements. Thermostat seems to read higher than it is set.
