Customer Questions & Answers

Does this paint work with a HVLP sprayer?

Asked by: Gadget
I've tried 3 nozzels 1.5, 2.0, 2.2 and none of them worked very well. It's too thick to get enough volume in a gravity fed cup. I've got various degrees of splattering which looked like orange peel even while going very slow. If you could somehow thin it like oil based paint I think you could but you aren't suppose to thin it. Answer is no IMO.

Can I order the base color and have this paint mixed in the local store to any color I chose?

Asked by: chris
Not really. I WOULD check to see if they have color chis in-store though as the color I picked out was bluer in 'real life' than it was on my computer - no one's fault, just the way it is. They do not carry this paint in-store at all.

Is this paint suitable for a radiator? Can it withstand the heat?
Asked by: Linda
Hi Linda, Thanks for writing in! It's not recommend using the Alkyd Semi-Gloss Paint on surfaces that will get too hot to touch. If this is the case, it's best to use a specialty product made to resist high temperatures. Sorry for the inconvenience, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Would painting my metal bathtub with this product last?

Asked by: Hewitt
Hello Hewitt, Thanks for your interest in Behr paint. Applying our products to a bathtub might not give lasting results. Our testing doesn't support our coatings going on areas that have this high of a moisture exposure, so we'd recommend against applications on bathtubs and showers. You might check with Home Depot for another brand's coating that may be suitable. Best wishes! -Joshua

1-gal. #AE-24 Barn Brown Semi-Gloss Enamel Alkyd Interior/Exterior Paint is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst paint ever I have been using Behr paint for over 30 years now and love it. That is until I bought this alkyd paint. This paint was a nightmare.I messed with it for about 6 weeks painting a few pieces of wood. and the paint would not dry. After 4 weeks it was still tacky. I even used a fan for several days on it to help dry.My family called it the paint from ? . Bought a second can and had the same issue. The humidity level was also low. I wasted about 5 hours on a can of this paint including prepping and using Behr oil based paint which turned out great. This paint should be pulled off the shelves. I bought the best brush and the ultra fine finish roller and am attempting to paint my doors at this time. Each time I coat it I get brush or roller marks. I sanded them out smooth and re-coat with the same results. I also tried rubbing them out with Pumice and Rottenstone. Neither of these worked. In the past I have made many cabinets and have always got a high grade finish. with these techniques. YOU just can't beat good oil based paints for high quality finishes.

This paint created a finish on my old wood/veneer combo cabinet that looked like it had come from the factory. The first coat seemed streaky, but after the second coat, I was completely satisfied! The paint is smooth and easily adheres to a clean surface. The color is excellent--true to the picture and modern. I would definitely recommend not judging this paint by the first coat. The second coat completely changed the look of it, and I ended up only needing those two coats to get the finish I hoped to get.

As other reviews have said - decent paint but is not a substitute for a quality Oil based Enamel. Never really dries and it is not hard to the touch, feels soft and tacky even weeks later. No problems with coverage or application just hard to sand and stays "rubbery". Every easily marked with scratch or finger nail. Don't Uses on cabinets.

I used this to paint ~500 ft of new polyurethane crown molding and it did a great job. This after I tried Valspar and the regular Behr semi-gloss, neither of which flattened out or covered well after two coats. The Valspar Signature was awful. The Alkyd paint covered well with no brush marks.

Adhesion is great. Surface dries in a few hours, but takes several days to really harden / cure. I used it for a cabinet paint job and like it so much, I'm using another shade for the next cabinet paint job.

I used this product on cabinetry to 'try' before I build my kitchen cabinets which we intend on painting. The cabinets came out great! I wish HD would carry color chips in-store (or that one can order on-line) as this color is a little bit 'bluer' than it appears on-line - no one's fault - just the way it is with on-line color. It goes on smoothly - for cabinet work I recommend rolling it on and only brushing (with a good brush) where you have to. I recommend using a paint stirrer attached to a drill to mix as this paint separates pretty readily. I am going to do a trial with a sprayer to see if I can get an even better finish - although the roller applied finish looks really good. Love the fact that it is not oil based, low VOC (although it does have a distinct 'vomit' smell while applying) and clean-up is easy - soap and water. It sticks really well!!! Took me a couple of days to get it off the heel of my hand that I missed in cleaning up - once it dried it was a bear to get off (no pun intended). Verdict? This is the paint I will be using on my kitchen cabinets.
