Farm and home stores have them often in the horse section as horses love to chew on stalls. I uses ivory soap mixed with red pepper to make a paste and paint/rub in on the area. I find if you mix in a smell (lemon, anise) from wife's spice cabinet they associate the unpleasant experience with the smell and then you can spritz things with the smell and they will not chew. Bitter Apple is another product that is sold at pet stores that works well. The SDS on this product shows toxicity of 1 which if memory serves me is equal to table salt. Again, watch the pet, and take actions should things happen. But a great paint and trust me it holds up well. In Kansas we get sandblasted with the wind and this stuff is almost like a rubber coating. I use a brush and put on 2 coats. Over kill probably as one coat is very thick with a good quality brush. Absolutely. I used this paint for my chicken coop and it worked very well. After all, it is designed for barns. If your dog is in the habit of acting more like a beaver and chewing on the house you may not want to use it until you read about the toxicity.

Hi Lynn8,
Thanks for your interest in our Behr Barn & Fence Paint. This paint covers 200 - 250 sq. ft. on rough surfaces and 400 - 500 sq. ft. on smooth surfaces. If your fence is 200 yards and roughly 6' tall, your project area is about 3600 sq. ft. We estimate 13 - 14 gallons should be enough for your project.

That said, I didn't follow all the fuss with primer for my application. Just removed big flakes with wire brush, removed moss with power washer and most mildew, and covered my existing latex paint with one coat of this BEHR Barn Red. It worked perfectly - no regrets or peeling after 2 years. Read Less

Answer:
Yes, you should only need to prime over latex when making a big color change. It will save you a coat or two to get to the new color. The other case would be when you have bad chipping and raw wood exposed. I've painted old barns with it and it did fine over latex.

Dear Stan,
Thank you for your question regarding Behr Exterior Barn and Fence Paint. If the surface is in good condition, you can apply directly over it when clean and dry. If the latex or oil-based finish has started to crack, peel, or flake, use a product such as Behr Premium No. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper on wood to remove the coating. Be sure to rinse thoroughly when done. Follow with a product such as Behr Premium No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Scrub, rinse, and allow to dry completely when done. Any bare or exposed Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other “bleeding” woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer to reduce these stains. Once the surface is properly prepared, clean and dry, it is ready for Behr Exterior Barn and Fence Paint.

Probably work fine if you prime the metal first to get a good surface. I've done so on old farm gates. The trick was getting the metal really clean and priming.

Hi Renee. I'd probably not use this on iron gates because it's formulated more for wood or brick. If you're looking to paint iron, look for a product specifically for metal (often called "enamel") and use a good primer made for metal, too. Good luck on your project!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Outdoor Shed Paint Ever I restored a somewhat run-down, mildew-stained, neglected & faded wooden shed 2 years ago. First removed the mold/mildew with power washer and wire bristle brush to remove most mildew and paint chips. Found this BEHR Red Exterior Barn/Fence paint highly recommended on-line for it's durability and added mildewcide (perfect for my high humidity location). Used no primer paint and applied only one coat which covered well. Paint applies easily, very mild distinct odor (mildewcide), and the easy water cleanup was a plus. Though I wasn't necessarily looking for the Barn Red color, it has now made my simple shed a showpiece getting compliments from neighbors and contractors. Paint job has held up extremely well x 2 years, and No Return of the mildew! [KILZ brand Siding/Fence/Barn Red Paint is also a perfect color match to the BEHR product - though it's cheaper, it is less mildew-resistant and doesn't coat as well). Home Depot is the ONLY retailer for this BEHR Barn paint, and product doesn't ship to every state (call your friends/family). Stock up while you can! Order on-line well in advance on your project. Best paint I ever purchased! June 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best paint The best paint ever, covers real good. Goes on real smooth [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] August 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Outside paint/stain to Use In April 2015 I purchased the Behr Semi Transparent Weather Proofing All-in-One Wood Stain & Sealer in the Woodbridge color. I chose this particular brand due to the quality of Behr paints, but mostly due to the warranty for this stain. I put it on my grandchildren's playhouse. It is now 1 year later and it looks like just put the stain on a few weeks ago. Fast forward to early June 2016. I removed 9 large pine trees in my backyard revealing a very faded and grey wooden fence. I decided that since the playhouse looked so great, I went and got 2 gallons of the same stain & color and painted that fence, which now matches the playhouse. Great stain, easy to put on, easy clean up! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Red Barn Paint So pleased with this purchase! Very affordable, great coverage and easy clean up. This paint gave new life to my barn and the color is fantastic! I highly recommend Behr Red Barn and Fence Paint!! August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy Home for my chickens I build custom chicken coops and also raise chickens myself. I stumbled on this paint and thought I would try it. I have to say its great. I brush all my paint on as I think it gives better protection than a roller and I hate spraying as the thin coat protects nothing. This stuff goes on thick, covers even weathered and stained wood. I use reclaimed materials and this covers all sins of previous colors. I do put on two coats, but I think its probably overkill. I just want happy chickens and customers. If your using particle board siding I recommend painting the underside edges and about an inch of the last board so rain/weather cant get to the glue that holds it together. This stuff works well. I find that from can to can the color stays consistent so fear not about color variations. February 21, 2016
