Product Overview

Backer-On screws are designed for attaching hardibacker fiber cement backerboard to wood or light gauge steel studs. Ideal for use in high moisture areas such as baths and showers, sink backsplash, countertops and floors. Backer-On's self-drilling point eliminates the need to pre-drill, and a special patented thread design reduces installation torque and provides superior holding power. A special rib design under the head countersinks for flush seating in board, providing a smooth surface for tile. Backer-On screws feature a corrosion resistant finish which prevents rust from bleeding into tile. Answer:
Always check with the manufacturer since they all have different installation requirements. A quick stop at Hardibacker's site shows:
"Fasten HardieBacker cement board with specified nails or screws every 8” over the entire surface. Keep fasteners between 3/8" and 3/4" from board edges and 2" from board corners,"
You can maintain this only where there are support studs for walls, obviously, otherwise Read More

You can maintain this only where there are support studs for walls, obviously, otherwise this rule is to be maintained regardless of placement on walls, counter tops, ceilings or wherever.
There are also other standards worth checking out on their site. Such as recommended fasteners and placing board into a bed of thinset, for example.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value I am a professional tile-setter who uses this product all the time. The person recommending Phillips heads is dead wrong. Perhaps he is not using an impact drill? (Essential for installing cement board.) We have tried a variety of similar square head screws available from different manufacturers but these, unlike others: 1.) Fit snugly. They stay on the bit (so you can load your screw and punch it into the board to start it) 2.) Are cut more accurate so the tips bite in without falling over or spinning in place. 3.) Are more rarely filled with coating in the square head (though still a few in each box) 4.) Save time! (for all the above reasons) 5.) Are reasonably priced All these things matter. A lot! We now use these exclusively. January 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Strip like crazy Hardibacker doesn't bow so as soon as you start drilling the board lifts off the wall and before you can get it flush, the head on the screws strip. Go with a standard Philips October 10, 2015
