underlayment

What kind of underlayment is recommended for nail down install. Also which kind provided better sound insulation ? Thanks
Asked by: snop
I used basic red rosin paper underneath mine, but I glued down 1/2" plywood over the original 70 year old diagonal 1x6 plank floor. HD carries several grades of underlayment you can use if you want .. it's all less than $1 a foot. I think squeak prevention is the main goal of them. I don't believe any underlayment would help with actual sound transmission from one floor to another -- I think you'd want to insulate joist spaces or use specific drywall hanging systems for that purpose.

Plano Oak Gunstock 3/4 in. Thick x 5 in. Wide x Varying Length Solid Hardwood Flooring (23.5 sq. ft. / case) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value! I just finished laying 1000sf and purchased another 700sf for a second project. These 5" planks look great and go down fast. I have found a few unusable pieces, but a few bad pieces are ok when you consider the low cost of this flooring vs other 5" planks. I recommend with no reservations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product should be sold as seconds Very unhappy with this product wasted more than was used Cuts are crooked and boards are not all the same width So many are warped with a lot of knots on the edges then when the milled it there are chunks missing where the knots where Some of the boards are different heights If I was installing my self I would have returned it all but I paid someone to do it and that's what I get because they knew that I would have put carpet back down and they would have been out there pay Should be twenty dollar a box instead of almost a hundred My advice don't buy unless you like to waste money on the bright side I liked the color and the finish

What bothered me more was the fact that in a lot of cases they were marked from the factory. A large amount of tongues cut off, grooves cut off (both on the edge and the ends) Occasionally, the end was not cut off square. There was a lot of planks that on the bottom was part of the bark and not usable. Color control was fairly good. Then one saving grace was that HD allowed me to return 20% of the purchased boxes. I showed them pictures of all the issues and there was no problem and was compensated for my aggravation. I worked this out before I started the project.

There were lots of longer boards, though the occasional boxes were heavy in shorter ones. Overall since we were doing a large project, we had more than enough longer boards. There were a few that had a little damage (like someone had stepped on the edge of a board and crushed it a little), but not many. I am quite pleased with the finished product.

The finish on the flooring was very good and a consistent color throughout the box. I was a bit disappointed in the number of defective pieces. Defects were found in damaged grooves, broken tongues and non-straight boards. Pieces of the boards could be used, but more scrap than I expected. I think I had less scrap using the Bruce as opposed to the Plano.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bruce flooring Short pieces varied in size (width), these pieces had to be removed and discarded causing a lot of waste. The rest of the boards had to be inspected for straight before installing, this process added significant time. If you check your pieces and are patient with the installation your floor will come out looking great.

I have used Bruce hardwood products for over 20 years, however quality control is slacking.....there were several pieces in each of 11 boxes ordered that were unusable, or had noticeable defects.....Still an overall excellent product, but you need to be certain you order PLENTY to allow for poor quality pieces.
