Secure enough for a primary exterior entry?

Asked by: Jdys
ABSOLUTELY! They'll be more than secure enough for anyone fine with open borders. Keep your valuables in your entryway for better ease of adequate distribution toward all visitors to assure they don't think you're phobic of anyone. :-D If keeping them closed however, they'll keep out most smaller wildlife, and bugs that cannot fit through the gaps left for proper door swing.

frosted glass

can this unit be ordered with frosted glass instead of clear glass?
Asked by: mary
for anyone wondering the same, we "frosted" our clear glass (BOTH SETS of doors--the 4' Version and the 5') with a 3-dollar can of Rustoleum Frosted glass from Home Depot and LOVE the results! I suppose it'd look tacky if you have pets or kids often scratching at the surfaces that you spray-frosted, but if you don't have that issue, I'd highly recommend it! (I didn't know it was existent until we found if for ourselves, wanting to privatize the panes.)

I'm looking at installing in a 62x83x6 3/4" opening. It is not replacing an existing door. I am truly a beginning Do it Yourselfer. Will I need to install some sort of frame to meet the 60x80" size?
Asked by: jgmoody
I'll try to help you, jg... Don't be intimidated--I'm not far removed from your level of experience, and other than a helping hand to maneuver the door into place, due to its heft, it's pretty easy, compared to some things! (I installed the 4' version into a custom-built pantry, that was about as easy as the 5' that went into our Master) My install was a modified rough, similar to yours, sorta. But same idea of how to opening was 63x81x4 & 5/8". The door arrived with a frame that was closer to 83" high, with a large gap (if installed direct, as-is) where the door swing meets the floor. To fit my 81" vertical rough, I simply skill-sawed approx 2" from each of the frame's vertical panes before bringing the whole thing inside. I'd recommend something similar to anyone, so your gap under the door is closer to desirable--for you, I'd simply add any 2x6 board (glue and screw, or even glue& nail-gun, with BIG NAILS!) on your existing horizontal "header"...measure your new rough-opening-height and compare to the door frame you get...trim its base as needed. If your newly established header is "true"/level, you can simply finish-nail-gun the door frame into place without shims. (you CAN screw the frame into place, if going for a rustic look, but finishing nails work, and are indistinguishable when finished.) .. Now for the width adjustment: AGAIN wait until you've the actual door home, so you can verify actual dimension, and you have options. With your approx 2" of "play" side-to-side, you can likely slap in a vertical 2x6, and shim as needed. OR: you can get door frame into place and decide which way you'd like to have it. (centered in rough, or slid to one side for allowance of finished look and function). For MY install, I used existing header (the upper horizontal beam) for a flush mount, and I built up a 2" beam on ONE side, to allow for better spacing in room and for how final trim would look with adjacent walls. This is funny, but I actually used two vertical boards from the door I removed, butted up, to shim the one side--because I'm totally into reappointing materials! lol I then had to shim each vertical only slightly, since existing rough wasn't "true/plumb"...but with a little patience, I got both sides to not only be truly vertical, but provide the gap I wanted where the doors met when closed. Remember all those extra shims and fillers? All you need to do is pick a trim with enough width to span over your inner-work, and it'll look beautiful...probably at least as good as a pro--because YOU took the time to make it perfect! See my other answers on the ball catch adjustments...also, if wanting a bit more privacy, we used a can of Rust-Oleum frosted glass, which Home Depot sells cheaper than anyone...and it turned out PERFECT!! If there's questions to clarify, ask, and I'll try to do so. Godspeed!

My wife and I purchased this for our business and we are very happy with how it looks and works. I would, however caution you to paint/stain/seal it as quickly as possible after hanging it to avoid minor warping in the door itself (which we were able to resolve with a little humidity adjustment in the shop). It looks and works great and we are very happy with our purchase. Ours came with plastic over the glass panes to make clean up easier after applying your chosen covering (we ended up painting to go with the shop decor) and I will say that removing that plastic is a pain in the backside. Get a razor blade and take your time cutting each little 'pane' pf plastic film off. But, still easier than scraping paint off the glass. Thanks for a great product!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Door is great; Installation - not so much The quality of the door is about what you'd expect for the price paid. The doors are not aligned with one another, but not sure if this is the product or the abysmally poor installation. We trusted Home Depot's installer - huge mistake! The concepts of "level" and "square" eluded him. The result is unacceptable, so we will pay someone else to remove the door and reinstall it correctly. The installer also left all the scrap lumber and material on our front porch. We were told that we would have had to pay an extra charge to have scrap materials removed. This would be a good thing to mention to customers at the time of purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for This is an inexpensive builders grade door, so If you are expecting quality I'd look elsewhere. The jambs came misaligned, and were bowed. Every door in stock was as well, some worse than others, so choose wisely. The stop mold on all of them was terribly installed, so expect that it will need to be pulled and reinstalled so that it actually fits close to the door. The biggest issue was that the jambs are veneer and not solid wood, and the water from the latex paint caused the veneer to bubble and warp. That section had to be cut out and patched with an epoxy filler...a huge waste of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frenchie Yes, the doors did exactly what I thought they would do. They have my finished basement family space a touch of class while also maintaining much of the small amount of natural lighting from the small windows.
