The Akorn Kamado Kooker can maintain consistent temperatures from 200 degrees to 700 degrees F. This wide range allows the Akorn to cook variety of foods such as steaks, fish, chicken, ribs, brisket, pizza, bread and even cookies. The innovative design uses double walled steel with insulation. In order to generate heat, air must be flowing through the grill and around the coals. Air flow causes food to dry out. With the Akorn insulated design, it retains heat better, requiring less heat and less air flow. Therefore, insulated heat, juicier meat.

  • 306 sq. in. of primary cooking space and a 165 sq. in. warming rack

Answer:
yes; it basically goes below the grill that you will set the turkey on. I'd say a giant turkey-- like 15 pounds or more, might be larger than the stone. you can also use a pizza stone for smoking. same thing.

Best practice would be to remove all ash and coal after every burn and thoroughly clean up immediately ( I know, .. right!). Mine gives a long smoke time using a Weber fuel holder to pack the side for an indirect burn. A loose chimney of coal with do a whole brisket or a couple rib racks easily, Just did a 9 hour burn on some beef ribs, held the temp @ ~ 180*-225* through out. So the thermal properties are quite solid. the grate is also a solid piece. So they get an A+ for those two attributes . However, the rest is a D-, the upper rack twisted off in first year, really cheap metal throughout, Temp gauge is typical POC, the side table are also pulling out from the body, (really need a more secure method of attachment. Afraid to place a brisket on it while getting the grill ready) . The hooks are quite cute as they will hook just about everything you don't want hooked, to include you. The ash pan hanger failed, one side broke off and I have to bend it back and just use the the two hinges to hold it in place. So there goes that easy on, easy off aspect. I suspect the cheap metal cannot withstand a hot fire. Lastly, as a few others have said, the bottom ash pan and ring are rusting out. So for me the cost for it's three year shelf life has been a 100$ a year. Still have an old Weber is good condition that is 35 years old. @ 80$ that' a great deal. So all in all, the design is decent, the burn is great, however, the durability is disappointingly not.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Grate rusted after three weeks. I have owned this grill for three years now and am finally giving up on it! After the first year, the screws that held the lid on broke. I was able to fix it but did question its durability. More recently, I order a new grate for it. Despite having seasoned the grate according to the instructions and storing the unit under a cover, the grate started rusting after three weeks. I felt that the was not acceptable considering the amount of time. When contacting customer, the only recommendation was to clean off as much as possible and season the grate again. There was not offer to replace them since they were not 'under warranty.' I question the quality of the product and the customer service of the company.

I've traditionally used gas grills but decided to take a chance on the Akorn and it has really paid off!! Steaks? Great! BBQ ribs? Excellent! Whole and split chicken? Some of the best I've ever eaten and certainly the best I've ever grilled. Pork chops? Same. We did a 11 lbs turkey for thanksgiving dinner and it was delicious!! With its 2 dampers (lower and upper) the Akorn gets up to temperature quickly and holds it as well as any kitchen oven I've ever had. When I slow smoked ribs it maintained 220F for 5+ hours with only 2-3 damper adjustments. Construction is solid as well.

All the parts fit nicely. Finish is superb. Love the cooker. I have done beef, pork, chicken, pizza, burgers, dogs and more. I use 3-4 times a week and use straight wood. Oak, Mesquite, pear, plum....just depends on the length of cook. Get a duel zone thermometer to monitor meat and grill temps. Unit seems to be durable. I live in the rust belt so time will tell but 40 cooks in and all seems well. You need this. Buy a cover...

This was purchased as a gift, When I was putting it together it had a dent in the lid. I called as I had it partly put together and I was told I had to return it like it was in the box. I was not going to take every thing I had put together apart and try to get it back into the box as it came, to only drive two hours to a store to return the items. The grill itself cooks great just sad it has a dent when I paid so much for it

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rusted out I have owned the Akorn Kooker for 2 years and the ash pan is completely rusted out. I contacted the manufacture and they wanted me to buy a new ash pan for $40.00....what a joke as they said that part wasn't covered under warranty, how convenient! Don't waist your money and buy another brand that won't rust out like mine did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't stop using it! The grill was relatively easy to assemble. After doing the seasoning I went straight to smoking some ribs. Once you learn how to tweak the air vents, maintaining temps was easy. I bought a dual digital thermometer to keep track of the food temps and the actual grill temps. The analog thermometer on the grill was off by 10-15 degrees. I got about 4 uses from the original batch of lump charcoal. The flavor was excellent on everything I put in there. So far I've smoked some ribs, pork roast and whole chickens. I've grilled hamburgers and brats. All had an wonderful smoky flavor that you just can't get on a gas grill. I bought the Chargriller heat deflector and cover, both of which I highly recommend. Definitely glad I made this purchase.

I've had for 2 months or so now, makes excellent slow cooked ribs with the optional grilling stone. The last time I was cooking it started to rain as I was finishing up and I didn't place the cover back on because it was hot. Turns out that was a mistake. Water leaks into everything. In the thermometer so now I can barely read it, the insulation inside cover was soaked, the ash tray was full of water. I lite a huge pile of charcoal and let it burn at 600F for hours on end to try and dry out the grill. I can see it turning into a rust can a year or two down the line if water keeps getting trapped inside. Some other dislikes are the metal hooks which fall out when moving it around and are basically garbage. The metal shelves should have better been made of wood. Also can't really do a true two zone grilling like on a Weber. Overall I'm happy with it as it it makes great BBQ, I bought it to try out a Kamado style grill. I just do not have very high expectations of how long it will last and I probably will upgrade to a true Kamado when this one rusts away.
