Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used for ceramic tile over plywood?

Asked by: Chris
NEVER install ceramic tile directly on plywood. Why? The plywood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. Very slightly, but it does move. Ceramic or porcelain tile will move too, but SIGNIFICANTLY less than plywood. What happens when plywood is shrinking or expanding, and the tile can't keep up? Cracks, grout joints crumbling, and tile coming loose. Use some backer system - a concrete board or uncoupling membrane.

What trowel size (W" x D") and notch shape should I use to install 12" x 12" sheets of 2" x 2" tile?

Tile will be installed over existing tile which has already been hit with 80 grit sandpaper.
Asked by: Frank
So, I think I read this wrong and gave wrong information. If the tile is 2x2 tile in 12" sheets applied onto the wall on like a backsplash, you could get away with just a simple V groove trowel. If this is going on the wall of a shower then 1/4" trowel is what you need.

I'm laying a 5/16 in thick (10in x 14in) ceramic tile. As this tile is almost at the 15in threshold, should I use "Flexbond" or the "Natural Stone and Large Tile" mortar??
Asked by: John
I would probably use large tile thinset, but I'm sure either one will work just fine if the application process is correct.

This thin-set mortar remains workable for an hour, which gives me time to get edge and corner tiles installed without worrying about the mortar setting up before I'm through. I have completed two bathrooms, and probably won't know for years how good it is at "crack prevention". It mixes quickly with water, with minimal problems with lumps remaining in the mortar after mixing. It costs just under $30 before tax at my local store, which seems expensive, but the relatively slow setting is worth it to me. I have about 2,000 square feet of tile to lay in the rest of the basement, and will use this product despite the high price.

Had great grab and hold strength when wet and dried fairly quickly. I can't tell if the "Crack Prevention" property works (after just 1 week) but the fully dried product does appear to have great hold strength and just a bit of flexibility, so I expect it will deliver on that statement. Overall a superior product at a premium price but IMO well worth the extra money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I recently used Custom while nstalling 48x7 wood look porceline on a concrete slab in a basement. I was very happy with their mortar simply because of the open time. The open time after it was mixed was over an hour, of course i had to throw the mixing wand in and remix a couple of times. The initial bond was about 5 hours and after he recommended 24 hour time, I was a permenant fixture.

Very thick, dry, and labor intensive compared with thinner mortars used for smaller tiles. 4.7L wasn't always enough to wet all the mortar. My 3.0 amp Craftsman drill was barely enough to mix this mortar while others are easily mixed. I recommend wetting each tile with a sponge before applying

It's certainly more expensive than some but there's a reason for that. You don't want to risk using cheaper material. It could mean replacing tiles or an entire floor!
