Questions & Answers

Can this be used for ceramic tile over plywood?

Asked by: Chris
NEVER install ceramic tile directly on plywood. Why? The plywood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. Very slightly, but it does move. Ceramic or porcelain tile will move too, but SIGNIFICANTLY less than plywood. What happens when plywood is shrinking or expanding, and the tile can't keep up? Cracks, grout joints crumbling, and tile coming loose. Use some backer system - a concrete board or uncoupling membrane.

What trowel size (W" x D") and notch shape should I use to install 12" x 12" sheets of 2" x 2" tile?

Tile will be installed over existing tile which has already been hit with 80 grit sandpaper.
Asked by: Frank
So, I think I read this wrong and gave wrong information. If the tile is 2x2 tile in 12" sheets applied onto the wall on like a backsplash, you could get away with just a simple V groove trowel. If this is going on the wall of a shower then 1/4" trowel is what you need.

I'm laying a 5/16 in thick (10in x 14in) ceramic tile. As this tile is almost at the 15in threshold, should I use "Flexbond" or the "Natural Stone and Large Tile" mortar??
Asked by: John
I would probably use large tile thinset, but I'm sure either one will work just fine if the application process is correct.

We have been using this stuff for years and I would say it USE to be one of the best products around. We are a nationally recognized home builder and have one every major award in construction so trust me with where I am going with this. Recently we purchased about 6 bags of this product for an Italian tile we were installing. 3 out of the 6 bags were defective and the mortar, several days after installation, was soft and never properly solidified to the consistency of ANY mortar we've ever used. You could crumble the mortar in your hand with ease. This is after installation, not prior to, just so were clear. The mortar never actually set up properly. The old mortar in the bucket, that wasn't cleaned and thrown out, would just crumble off the side walls. The entire floor that was set was ruined. You could pick up the tiles off the Hardi Backer with your hands. We spoke to a representative of Custom and WOW did they not give any concern or offer any assistance what so ever to our concern. They said "clearly this is an installation problem not a product problem." To which I stated "so 22 years experience setting stone and tile around the US doesn't qualify us to know how to understand the proper "use" of this product. This isn't rocket science, you add water to the proper consistency, install and let set up. But this product as good as it use to be has major flaws in manufacturing that they are throwing under the rug and hiding form the general public. This review is made July 13th, 2017 so DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT IF YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW! Since then we have noticed a similar flaw in some of their other products as well and have since stopped using them all together. Since this is an unsolicited review, I will not say whom we are using but DO NOT recommend these guys at all. I hope this finds its way in the hands of some of management of this company so they can look up my phone call with their rep whom was completely disrespectful and non concerned with the LEGITIMATE problems with their product.

Custom Building Products makes a wide range of mortars, and The Home Depot sells much of that range. FlexBond is Custom's most heavily modified general-purpose thinset mortar. It is designed to be used for every tiling application that thinset mortar is used for: ceramic, porcelain, glass, stone, and brick tile. FlexBond comes in both white and gray colors. The gray here is the general-purpose mortar that is used in most applications. The white is used for installing transparent, translucent, or thin light-colored tile, wherever the gray mortar may end up making tiles look darker. FlexBond is NOT a medium-bed mortar and NOT designed to hold up heavy, large tiles and keep them from settling and moving over their drying period. FlexBond should not be used for anything larger than 12x12-inch tile, a common size, if keeping the tile from settling is a major concern. FlexBond dries harder and is initially stickier to succcessfully adhere to a larger variety of substrates during installation. This is what you use for your critical installs, where you need to give your tile the best possible chance of staying where you put it, or where you're clearly trying to stretch the limitations of the tiling method you're using. Despite it's higher price, this mortar is often worth a DIYer's consideration because it's much more bulletproof than something much less expensive, like VersaBond. Fewer things can go wrong, and the quality of the materials can often help someone with limited tiling skills get the job done with a higher rate of success. Be sure to clean your tools carefully when you're done with them. This stuff gets very hard and you might never be able to use the tools again if you leave them caked with mortar for a few hours.

Had great grab and hold strength when wet and dried fairly quickly. I can't tell if the "Crack Prevention" property works (after just 1 week) but the fully dried product does appear to have great hold strength and just a bit of flexibility, so I expect it will deliver on that statement. Overall a superior product at a premium price but IMO well worth the extra money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I recently used Custom while nstalling 48x7 wood look porceline on a concrete slab in a basement. I was very happy with their mortar simply because of the open time. The open time after it was mixed was over an hour, of course i had to throw the mixing wand in and remix a couple of times. The initial bond was about 5 hours and after he recommended 24 hour time, I was a permenant fixture.

Very thick, dry, and labor intensive compared with thinner mortars used for smaller tiles. 4.7L wasn't always enough to wet all the mortar. My 3.0 amp Craftsman drill was barely enough to mix this mortar while others are easily mixed. I recommend wetting each tile with a sponge before applying
