Product Overview

Achieving a vintage, time-worn look is simple if you start with the right paint.  With Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint, creating beautiful home decor and furniture pieces does not require skills or hours of training.  Make store-bought pieces or flea market finds look like they came from a European estate sale or a French countryside cottage by using Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint.

  • Water-based, low odor
  • For a protected matte finish, just rub on without buffing, buffing will create a glossier sheen, no need to re-apply wax - initial coat provides long lasting durability
  • Apply sparingly, do not over wax, too much wax will leave a finished surface feeling tacky, rub off excess wax
  • Waxes clean easily off brushes with soap and water, finished pieces can also be cleaned gently with a damp rag
  • Final packaging may vary
  • Online Price includes Paint Care fee in the following states: CA, CO, CT, MN, OR, RI, VT

How do I remove this wax?

How do I remove this wax?
Asked by: JJ
Amy Howard at Home brand (Ace Hardware is selling her products or can buy online under Amy Howard at Home) makes a product called Clean Slate that is supposed to take off any grease, waxes, polished etc. You just wipe it on with a lint-free rag, and you don't have to rinse it off with water afterwards. It isn't cheap, but it can be used for lots of applications.

after painting a piece of furniture with chalky paint, do you have to use the wax, if so why??

Asked by: Pat
Yes. Chalk paint needs to be "sealed" so it stays on the piece you painted. If not sealed, waxed, it can rub off. Best sealer is a chalk paint wax. Apply it with a rag, rubbing lightly over the surface. Let it dry for 24 hours before doing a second wax coat....helps the finish last longer and protects the surface if it is going to be in a heavy use area such as a table or chairs. You can also go over the final piece after waxing with a coat of polyurethane if the table might get wet.

How long does this wax take to fully cure?

I only did a section of my piece that I am working on to see the color, which is now where near what was indicated on the container or any sites, so I have decided to go with a different color. I would like to know how long I should wait before I can paint over this section. I did a light first coat of wax and it has been dry for 2 days. Other brands say a couple of weeks though.

Chalk paint wax is usually fully cured within 30 days....very much like polyurethane. You can apply a second coat after 24 hours if it is going to be used daily such as a table or chair. Give it time to cure and it will look great for years.

Americana Decor 16 oz. Clear Creme Wax is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Not rave-worthy. It kind of did change the color of the paint so it isn't REALLY clear. I would have preferred it to actually dry a bit whiter if anything rather than making the paint a bit darker. Decent product though and affordable. I needed something over the paint I used to make it smoother (since I painted a coffee table).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Really "Wax" I have refinished a ton of furniture for customers and for my own home and this product is just OK. Firstly it is important to understand that it is not at all a wax. It is more similar to a matte acrylic glaze. The negatives are it is tacky and runny while applying, difficult to apply evenly to a larger surface, seems to be less durable than a real wax finish, and really leaves a raw, unfinished, unprofessional look. Also it will yellow if applied too thickly or if it accumulates in corners. The positives are it is not smelly and toxic, and it can brush on and buff up nicely on smaller sized pieces like picture frames or mirrors. Also cool is that if you really like the raw, chalky look, and get frustrated by the rich sheen that real waxes provide, this does actually give that chalky finish and does not deepen the color of the paint at all. For my purposes (resale and painting for clients) I am more comfortable with other products.
